Hey guys,

On the off change someone here might know something, I have a client whose previous IT guy passed away, and they have a Scanjet 7000n that they need to configure for their new server. The thing requires a password to enter the bios-side setup, or the web-based setup. Anyone know how to reset that to start setup from scratch with a documented setup? We've tried things like 'scanner', 'admin', 'password', and of course a blank entry. No dice. It's from 2010 I believe, and out of warranty. It has less than 800 feeds through it, which I believe was a single court filing, so it's basically brand new for an enterprise-class scanner. But right now it's utterly useless.

I did the reset options available on the user panel, but that didn't help at all. It was more on the lines of clearing the send-to email settings for the old local exchange server (and they don't care about sending to email, we just want it to scan to a network share, or alternatively to usb keys).

If someone has some tips, PM me or post here. Thanks so much!

Restore factory settings
Use the Resets menu to restore factory settings.

1. Touch the Service button, and then touch the Resets button.
2. Touch the buttons associated with the subsystems you wish to reset to factory defaults (Address
Book, Digital Send, E-mail, Fax, General, Security), and then touch the Reset Settings Now
button.

Cold Reset
Initializes device settings to the factory default values.

1. Shut down device.
2. Turn on device while holding down the esc key. This will take you to the boot menu.
3. Select Administrator Tools.
4. Select Cold Reset, then select Back, and Continue.

Did the first one, but it didn't let me in either, original password still there.

Can't get to the second one, I see the administrator tools entry, but it's greyed out, and to access it the administrator password must be entered.

This is the stuff I did earlier, but looking for something deeper (maybe a mobo bios reset somehow?)

So, decided to open it up. 3 screws in the back let you slide out the board, with drive, ram, cpu access. There is a typical motherboard battery (I removed this), and a CLRTC jumper, which I promptly tried.

For the odd change that maybe the password was stored on the drive, I decided to pull the hdd for now, but when it boots to the bios screen, it still won't let me access 'administrator tools', which is greyed out. The first selection is 'boot' basically ('continue' it says), the second is ''Sign In".

Edit : took a minute to take a couple of pics.

Well, new question.

As a long shot, since this is clearly an adapted x86 motherboard (complete with SATA hdd and DDR2 slot), maybe I could take a spare hdd, and copy a basic boot to command prompt partition to it with something like killcmos? At this point I'm sort of at the end of my rope. There is literally no documentation online other than the stuff posted above which does me no good (one HP thread had that same answer, it clearly didn't work for that guy either, the 'helper' kept telling him to go to the 3rd option when it wasn't accessible without the password to begin with, lol).

So, hilariously, I imaged a generic W7 32-Bit acronis image I had onto a spare 512GB SSD I had laying around, and copied Killcmos to it. Put it in the system, booted it up, and I actually got to see the loading screen of Win7 on the thing. The hardware was too different to let it fully boot though.

I don't have an image for Dos, so I'll have to make one tomorrow and reimage, perhaps to a smaller drive, and see what happens. Seems promising though, so long as KillCmos can wipe out whatever section of cmos that stores the administrator password. It might kill it, but at this point it's worthless anyway, and being out of warranty HP will want hundreds of dollars to perhaps simply tell me that they can't help me.

If I get an OS up on it, I'll post pics :)

It has a removable Celeron 440 CPU as well. I've already upgraded the ram from 512MB to 1GB. It also has USB ports. It'd be absolutely freaking hilarious to install Doom or something on it.

Haven't had time to make my dos+killcmos image, and sort of feel like it might render the thing unbootable. Anybody have any other ideas?

Hi Arkaign..... not sure if you still have that ScanJet but I have 5 of these things with the same issue and would like to see a solution.

In case you have not found this website, you can get any version of DOS that you want here - https://winworldpc.com/product/ms-dos/622

I have no issue with offering 1 or 2 up as sacrificial lambs if push comes to shove.....

Hey guys, I have been searching for help in German HP support and forums without being succesful. Now I have found this thread and I hope that you can help me making my Scanjet Enterprise 7000nx work again!

Since the firmware / software seemed to be damaged (the web view crashed, some settings could not be changed etc.), I did a cold reset and complete cleanup on the HDD. I thougt I could easily install the firmware / software again (using USB-sticks or network).

Unfortunately, it does not seem to work! In the boot menu, I can pick "download firmware", but it does not do so, although I set up my router to grant access to the right port etc. I guess this is because the product is not maintained anymore and HP closed the download servers.
Putting the firmware file on a USB stick does not work neither. There seems to be no way in the boot menu to download a file from the USB stick.
Further, the Scanjet is not available on the network any more (at least it is not on my router's list of connected devices).

Is there any way to put back the software / firmware on my Scanjet?? Thanks a lot in advance!

PS: I have got another Scanjet (same product but with a non-encrypted HDD, "Scanjet Enterprise 7000n"). Maybe I can copy the (properly working) files from its HDD to the HDD of my second Scanjet or so?

Hi! It looks like the manual 1.5GB OS download is working there for me. Can you try that, along with the steps earlier in the thread to copy the setup file to the root of the drive and run the install process?

If that doesn't work, running a Linux based drive image utility should give you the best chance of duplicating the drive off a working unit, though there is some reset necessary afterwards due to the serial number and MAC address being different.

Hi Arkaign,

The only file I can download (location Germany) is called "sj7000nI_fw_2204081_233277.zip". Its size is about 153.000KB (packed) or about 170.000KB unpacked.
There seems to be no file of 1.5GB size available.

I put both the zip-file and the unpacked bdl-file on a USB stick (root folder), but it does not offer any installation being in the boot menu or (re)starting the device with the USB stick plugged in.

Can you maybe upload your file (the 1.5GB file) so that I can have try with this one? Unfortunately, I do not have good skills and knowledge in Linux environments. Thanks a lot in advance!
