Check this carefully. My mother has one of these, and it's junk. I don't know if it's the hardware or software, but the computer cannot recognize it most of the time. The lamp stays on all the time. There's a patch for that, but it doesn't work well. I've seen several bad comments on the net about these. My .02 worth. :frown:

I have this scanner. Don't get any HP scanners! Sucky support. They didn't have win2k drivers for 7 months after win2k was released. Also they initially were not going to support win2k, until a whole bunch of people starting complaining. They have lost respect from a lot of people. Good move HP :p

I agree, both the 3200c and 4200c were the same in that respect. Problems with the recognition of the TWAIN river (the scanner seeks but the software says it cannot find it!) and Lamp sometimes went out sometimes not.
But the worst thing is the "Lite" software.
You CANNOT choose upfront the settings first and scan then.
The program does a scan and then decides what would be best for you!
You THEN can change a higher dpi or color/b&w , but that leads to a new rescan!
Two scans and many clicks.
Mine landed on ebey....

Huh. I have a 4200C and I love it. Picture quality is great and the speed is amazing. Yes, there's a lamp issue but the patch DOES fix it.

Amnesiac, ever had any problem with the computer not detecting it. I've tried my mother's on my computer and hers, and cannot get it to work reliably. Almost never works on hers. I been after her to let me format and reinstall, so I could start with a clean slate.

i'm w/ amnesiac on this one.. i own a 4200c w/ no issues. computer recognizes it, the 3 one-touch buttons work flawlessly, lamp goes on and off as expected.

great picture quality too. great 'quicky' scanner or only-used-once-and-a-while scanner. i have to agree w/ attention on the lite software though... if you are a hard-core scanner or a graphics artist of some kind, skip this scanner for the lack of software (or 2-scan requirements) alone. if you are going to use it once and a while, or for your elder family members or something, it is great!

its been a while since i've installed it, so i can't remember if i patched it or not. and i am using a newer system w/ great usb support which i'm sure makes a difference.

knowing my habits i can say that i probably patched it. i always look for the newest drivers whenever i install new hardware/software even if it is just a patch on the oem install cd...

my 2 cents!
