I am looking to replace my current setup of 2 x D-Link 16 port switches and 1 x 8 port Intel hub with one large modular switch like the HP Procurve 4000M.

In the $1500 to $2000 price bracket, for 48 ports, and with expansion as an option, is there anything better that anybody has found? I was only turned onto this switch by a local reseller recently, and haven't found anything else out there yet.

The features I am looking for largely revolve around using it for VLAN implementation, but the MAC address lockdown and SSHv2 (for the console administration) make a nice addition. This thing also has a LIFETIME replacement warranty, which honestly is probably the nicest thing so far. Modules are hot swapable as well.

My timetable for a purchase is right about 24 hours at this point as I need to replace my current setup quickly (fan is going out in one of the 16's). I have my opinions about this model, but I wanted to give some more experienced people out there a quick go at this one.

Thanks in advance guys and gals.

That HP switch specs says it has a 3.8gbps backplane, meaning as a 48 port 100/full switch it is oversubscribed. A Cisco 3548 on ebay will run around 1500-2000$.

The devil is in the details. Must have gotten caught up in the features. That thing might get ugly if I threw more modules in it at a later date....

So, the ProCurve 4148gl here would be a much better fit? Lanstreet.com currently has this listed at $2249, but there is a $400 rebate.

Honestly I do like ebay a lot and there is a lot of good equipment out there, but I can't risk being burned with a flaky seller not sending the product, or a used product having a diminished lifecycle. If I was purchasing this for myself then possibly, but not with my company's money.

All of which means I go retail on this one. Just out of curiousity though, does Cisco offer a modular switch in the category I am looking at here?

Modular switches are nice until you have to start shelling out $$ for the modules. The $2249 is just for the chassis, no modules. Modular switches with 48 10/100 ports are out of your 2k price budget.

And I agree that some ebay sellers can be shady or slow, but there are quite a few new-in-box-with-warranty 3548's online for <2k from sellers with a lot of good feedback.

Actually the 4000M comes with 40ports already, and the 4148gl (part# J4888A) comes with 48 out of the box, standard. That gets me to where I need to be now. For the future, yes the modules will be expensive (looks to be about $1000 for a 24 port module addin). Again, I am still resisting the monolithic (all in one stackable unit) switch like the 2950, 3950 or the like. If I go in for one of these types of units I can't purchase "just what I need at the moment" when expanding later on. I will be left with a collection of smaller units like I currently have and I really want to avoid that.

Modular will let me add 24 later on, and those new ports will be tied into the switch fabric with the rest of the ports, not strung through another external wire via gigabit uplink or something.

I like the Nortel 460 series and BPS switches.
The 460 has built in Gig uplink and cascade module for later expansion, the great part is that it comes in a 1U size..pretty damn nice. :)

I use all 450BT's on my network in the main office...over 70 of them without a single problem.

It may very well be worth every penny, I wouldn't know, but quite honestly $1500 for a 24 port switch is not the price point I was looking for. Well, I wonder what lucent, alcatel and the others are pushing.
