HP Printer Quesstion

Hi,

I refilled the ink on my HP deskjet 3920 printer, it prints pages fine, but the ink status shows both cartriges are empty, I uninstalled the printer software and installed it again, but the software still shows both cartriges are empty and have tried to install the cartriges again with the software running, but still no luck.

Any help appreciated.

The printer reads the id of the cartridge. All it knows is the cartridge has printed x pages, therefore it should be around y full.

The printer remembers the last two cartridges that have been installed. If you were to put in two other cartridges, and then put this one back in, it would read as full.

You could put in a completely dry cartridge and it would read as full.

That printer may have a refill detector scheme like the latest Canon printers. If you refill, it will stop reporting the ink level readings. At least with Canon the tanks are clear so you can see the ink level for yourself. Once the level reporting is shut off on the Canons it won't start back even if you install new OEM tanks. All to discourage using clone tanks or refilling. Maybe it's time to look at the new Kodak printers. They are supposed to have passive (no chips) tanks where even OEM tanks don't cost so much as the others, but still so much that it will be profitable to clone them... Then there is this new solid-state, full-width head technology that should obsolete all moving-head technologies. The speed is incredible and it appears that units with this technology will be available from HP shortly. What a great platform for continuous feed!

I'll add that you never want to run an HP cartridge completely dry. You'll literally cook the print head.
