Might want to put "AR" in the title (I was really hoping that I'd luck out and get a lappy without rebates). Nice deal, though.

Title's a bit misleading because no mention of rebate(s). But definitely HOT.

Weird question, but how do the XP-M's hold up to the P4-M's? I'd like to have something that I can expect some good battery life on (my Inspiron 1100 will get me about 2 hours of a DVD movie before dying on me).

The Athlon XP-M is a better processor but Toshiba tends to make better quality/ more reliable machines with sharper screens, so it really depends on what you are looking for.

Anyone try to install Fedora on one of these machines? Gave me one hell of a time.

FYI

Consumer Reports in the March 2004 issue tested laptops (and desktops). They also have technical support ratings and reliability ratings. The tech support and reliability ratings are based on a 4 year response from thousands of users.

HP had a tech support rating of below average, and Compaq had the worst rating, that being much worse than average.

For repair history, HP and Compaq also scored worse than average, and Compaq was the next to last.

IMHO Consumer reports ratings are the best available because they accept no advertising, (in fact they will take a company to court if the company uses CR's ratings in their advertising), and also because they have the largest sample size. Consumer Reports has about 4 million readers and they send out a comprehensive survey to every subscriber every year.

One last thing, Toshiba, and Dell laptops scored well.

Kind of makes me want to get the Inspiron 1100 with the free perks available.

Meh, I would say low end toshibas are about on par with low end hp's. Now old school tecras are another matter...
