I'd be afraid to buy a laptop from Big Lots. (I like Big Lots but my wife calls it Slime Lots.) It's refurbished, I presume?

No, it's new. I stopped in to see if the laptops were a refurb, and they're not. The story I got from a Big Lots employee is the laptops are coming from Circuit City. Circuit City is in some financial trouble, and is trying to escape going bankrupt. Apparently CC is selling off inventory to raise the cash they need to stay afloat. The employee also said to keep an eye out for other electronics and high tech items to start showing up in Big Lots.

Was the BL employee correct? I don't know, but I do know that CC is in heap big trouble.

Almost all laptops are forged by the same 3 or so super-manufacturers based in Taiwan (factories are on the mainland, I assume) despite the brand / place they are sold. I do not think you have to worry about quality issues more than any other these days.

I bit. :D

I've been looking for a new notebook loaded similar to this one but I was determined to NOT buy one that included rebates. This fit the bill.

BTW, it is new in an un-opened box. These notebooks were probably picked up from Circuit City. ;)

Thanks, Allisolm.

Oh, I am wounded to the core! Do you think that I would fail to mention something so important as refurbished, if that were the case? Oh, ye of little faith. :brokenheart: sniff, sniff

PS: if you're in the market and going by there anyway, they also have Kingston 1GB flash drives or SD cards or IOGEAR USB 5in1 card reader/writers for $6 and Sylvania 1GB mp3 players w/video for $25. Dunno if they are from CC as well.

Hmm... interesting. I'm in the market for a new lappy, but I haven't kept up with the world of laptops these days so I don't know what a good price is right now.

Was planning to wait until black Friday to get a hot deal on a laptop....

Pardon my noob questions, but I haven't bought any computer hardware in roughly 2 years...

1. Is there a noticeable difference between 5400 and 7200 rpm drives? Is it rare to find laptops with 7200 rpm drives at this price?
2. Is this better than the Gateway M-6862? The main advantage seems to be the smaller size. Am I correct in assuming the video card for the M-6862 is better?
3. Would this be able to run modern games well? I don't actually game a lot, but I might try Diablo 3 when it comes out...

Thanks!

And thanks allisolm.

1) There may be a bit of difference, with things loading quicker with the faster drive. You won't see the faster drives at this price point.

2) The Gateway has a smaller 250GB HDD, a bigger 15.4" screen and of course the Radeon Mobility 2600 XT with 512MB GDDR3. The screen puts these into slightly different size/weight classes and the Radeon gives it gaming abilities. So, if "better" means more portable, then the HP is better. If "better" means higher game framerates, then then Gateway is better.

3) No.

You're welcome, and stop calling me Allisolm. (with apologies to The Naked Gun)

Damn. I really need a laptop. This puts me at a very awkward position. Do I get this or do I wait for BB on Black Friday and hope they have something as nice?

I want something great but something cheap. And anyone know how much RAM I can stick in it after I buy it. I was hoping to put the max in whatever I get since they are basically giving RAM away.

Apparently Big Lots is selling more than one model HP laptop. The one linked to in this thread is not the same one they have in my area. Check Big Lots site for the ad and see which model number is in your area.

I see what you're talking about. They're both priced at $599 but the lesser spec'ed one (less RAM, smaller HD) is in their weekly circular, while I assume the one Allisolm and others have seen/bought is found in store only.

Thanks for that info. I did not know they had different ads for different areas. Yours has model dv6929nr . I added that to the OP.

Tallahassee doesn't advertise the Sharp 32" LCD mentioned by thebruiser.

Argh.. I need to see if stores near NYC (northern NJ) have any. I was thinking about getting the DV4T for for a recent coupon that brought the $599 machine to $509 but the coupon is no longer valid. Live search is offering a 20% cashback for the HP store though. If that works that would bring the cost down to $480 for a lesser spec DV4T (T3200, 2gb, 250gb). I'd much rather go for the deal you posted Allisolm. Is the warranty through HP when you buy from biglots? I assume a 1 year warranty?

Edit:
So I didn't know what BigLots was or how it worked. Apparently the 3 stores within reasonable driving distance to me don't have any in stock nor will they be getting any more since it is one time shipments. Only 1 said they will have a few more on sunday and to be there at opening to try and get one. He really stressed that they only have a few. He couldn't tell me what model. The dv4-1028us, I would go through the trouble of trying to get one but not the dv6928 that is in their ad for $550. It's a 15.4" machine and I am specifically looking for a 14.1". Plus the dv4-1028us has better specs.

What I really want to know is that are these places crowded with people waiting to grab a few sale items like a black friday sort of thing? The sale guy made it seem like I had to be there quick to get one of the few laptops they had. I want to know if anyone things it's worth me spending $50 and 2 hours for me to go to this store on sunday. Especially considering the cashback deal I posted above. What is your experience with BigLots?

Keep an eye out for next week's Big Lots ad. A cheaper lapto, a Compaq for $399 Big Lots online is also having specials. http://www.shopbiglots.com/fam...e=1&categoryId=3367512

It's a regional deal according to most sites. Thankfully my area (Pensacola, FL) is supposedly going to have 'em at this price, yay!

There's a few of us wolves in Pensacola it seems.

The manager of my local Big Lots, a friend of mine, told me the systems came from Circuit City. He also told me that there were going to be quite a few more good deals on computers.

Today's newspaper mentions that Circuit City is closing 20% of retail locations.

Connection? ;)

Naw, there's no possible connection. LOL

The laptop Big Lots had in my area for this week is the Compaq CQ50-110US for $399. I say had, because they were all gone yesterday.

Yes, it's refurbished but it looks like new so I bought it. That's unique. Lucky me!
The price (plus tax is $646) is so chip for that laptop.
Bestbuy and Circuit City sell it at around $900 eclusive of tax.
