I am looking for a cheap drive with no big pretense to speed, and this one is at a good price here. One clone CD database lists this 9150i 8x4x32 (NOT 9510i, please note the transposition). http://www.clonecd.da.ru/
But since HP seem to be making drives for other companies I'm not sure which one is compatible and which isn't.
I don't really care about burn proof, I'm sure I can leave my computer alone to do the job for 10 minutes ;)

edited because I have seen a lower specified Teac drive for less. I am not sure about the Adaptec software though because I use Windows 2000. Does the software work on it?

Two points:

1-For info about HP drives being compatible with CCD go to either the official or unofficial CCD page at here or here.

2- It depends on what you want to do with CloneCd. If you want to backup music and some general games then it's fine. If you want to backup SafeDisc2 games then it's another story altogether. Non-Phillips hardware burners have a real, real tough time making perfect 1:1 copies of SD2 protected games such as Hitman, Red Alert2 and so forth. This includes your prospective HP.

1:1 meaning that your copy will work and install in any cdrom/r/rw drive of your choice. Many burners like my Plextor 8432 ide drive will make copies of SD2 games BUT will only be playable/installable on that particular drive. This is the point many people forget. What some people are doing lately is using one drive (usually their good drive like their Plex/Yamaha/whatever) for general burning and then a cheap/used Phillips-based hardware drive for backing up SD2 games which are becoming the de facto standard. It's been widely suspected and rumored that many of the drive manufacturers have been appealed to by Industry folks to build burners that will "respect" modern copy protections.

Hope this helps.

Bump because this thread has fallen out of the top 60 and store shuts in not too long.

Well I understood that the philips drives didn't have the range of capabilities CloneCD required.

Actually, it depends. Most Phillips-based hardware burners can use CloneCd to burn but many do not read subchannel well which is why it's a good idea to leave the reading to a good cdrom.

Some Phillips brand burners do not work with CCD. Strange it sounds I know.

Hope this clears up the confusion.

OK I'm not fussed about the Adaptec software. I have NTI cdmaker. Guess I'll lean towards the good name and speed of HP for the extra money.

edit: OK, happy ending I got a compatible drive at a good price, thanks!
