They had the same laptop for the same price a few weeks ago. I jumped on it then as a college PC for a friend, and its awesome. The screen is really nice and the processor is pretty fast. It didnt have too much bloated software on it either. I also got the printer and thought it wasn't half bad for a free printer. Also, order it on staples.com for in store pickup if you have Bank of America and you can get cash back.

Even though it comes with Vista, I assume it comes with the CD where you can change it to XP if you wish to?

I know it won't come with XP as no laptop or desktop in the last 10 years came with a OS on a CD/DVD. It would be good to assume it came with one, some of us wish it was still 1999 when OSes came included with the computer like it should.

I just use my retail vista cd to format/reinstall over the bloat and just use the key from the sticker

What's up with all the laptops coming out with huge low-res screens? My current laptop (14.1") is 1440x900... 1366x768 just doesn't seem like enough pixels to work with on that size a screen.

Agreed. Also, I find it disturbing that only business laptops now offer non-glare screens. I can remember when laptops first became popular they had reflecting screens. Then after that the big selling point became anti-glare screens. Now we're back to glare. Weird!

Ehh...what? Me thinks your experience with notebook and LCD displays goes back six months, maybe even a whole year. A 14.1" display with 1440 x 900 is highly uncommon. I'd be willing to venture into making the statement that a laptop with 1440x900 display under 15.4" was unheard of two years ago. There is not a single 15" ~ 16" class LCD monitor at Newegg with a resolution greater than 1366 x 768.

19" class (including 18.5") widescreen monitors @ Newegg = 27 total

1360 or 1366 x 768 = 6
1440 x 900 = 17
1680 x 1050 = 3
1 unknown

For Pete's sake, the majority of 19" LCD monitors are 1440x900. How extraordinarily acute must your vision be (or how thick are your corrective lenses) to find 1440 x 900 remotely comfortable to view for any period of time on a 14.1 laptop?

Notebooks with 14", 14.1", and 15.4" displays @ Newegg = 73 total

1280 x 800 = 58
1366 x 768 = 3 (all 14")
1440 x 900 = 2 (only one 14")
1680 x 1050 = 9 (all 15.4" models that start at $1200)
1 unknown

Notebooks with 15.6" and 16" displays @ Newegg = 28 total

1366 x 768 = 28
1440 x 900 = 0

Anti-Glare screens+Non-LED makes for an extremely washed out picture. Why do most laptops have Glossy Screens? To give a better picture.

Btw, this is a very good deal. The 4500MHD is a passable graphics chip. It'll run World of Warcraft and Halflife 2.

Well maybe not way better, but definitely not worse, and much easier to use for many people, offering slightly better gaming performance, and no problems with UAC(or whatever that thing is called) XP will also perform better on crappy laptops.

And please quit calling people trolls just because they don't want to use unstable, hard to use software. (That being said, I use Vista myself, not by choice though)

Sorry 4 thread crapping, but I couldn't let this go.

I have the $400 Compaq from the Staples deal a few months ago - 15.6" 1366x768. It's perfectly usable.

Unstable and hard to use..? I have XP on my desktop and Vista on my laptop. Both are equally stable (very), and ease of use is likely just you not being familiar with Vista..no? ;)

I find XP easier to use also, but that's because I've been using it for years and I've been using Vista for a couple of months- with much less frequency as well.

Vista is def better than XP. If you have trouble with UAC, just turn it off! Vista does take 3x more hard drive space, but it can be a problem only if you're using an SSD with low capacity. Other than that, I think Vista is the best way to go. I'm betting that it'll be easier to find Vista drivers in the near future than finding XP drivers. Vista right nw is a very mature and stable OS. Its been 2 years since its release.

I am also not a big fan of LCD widescreens having less resolution with a far larger amount of real estate 20-22" widescreen LCDs compared to my original 15" CRT monitor that could pull off 1600x1200 no problem.

My Thinkpad R500 is a 15.4" widescreen but it only has 1280x800 resolution. Compared to my 17" Samsung 731B (1280x1024), it's almost the same width. I am currently typing on my quad core with a 19" Samsung 931B (also 1280x1024) and I'm finding it much easier on the eyes. I don't want to squint and hunch over to see my work, but that's just me. I had a 1680x1050 option for an extra 42 bucks when I configured this thing but I chose not to get it.

I hate the glossy mirror that most laptop LCDs have which is why I ended up with a Thinkpad. It's not much for movie viewing but it most definitely gets the job done.
