90K pages for a 4100 is practically brand new.

500K+ is common with that model line (4000, 4050, 4100, etc.), they usually get retired before they quit working. I've seen several with nearly 1 million pages.

It is, however, 110K pages away from needing a maintenance kit (a several hundred dollar part).

well i bought 2 of them.

one is a hp 4000 w/ 18k page count. very clean.

other one is hp 4100 w/ duplexer, jet direct card, but has 95k page count. also clean.

got both for $300. existing toner was included.

Good deal or not? One will be for my wifes work and the other for home use. I assume since they last sooo long that I did ok.

Thanks for the info viper. As for the maint. kit, I assume your talking about the fuser kit? Are they hard to install? Not that I'll have to worry about it right away.

$300 is a great deal, they were both $1000+ new, particularly the 4100dn.

The maintenance kit includes a fuser, but there is much more to it. It also includes feed/separation rollers for each tray, a feed roller + separation pad for the manual feed tray, and a transfer roller. And no, they aren't terribly difficult to install.

Again though it's 110K pages away so don't worry about until it asks for it.

One minor thing to look for on the 4000, if you pull the toner cartridge out you'll see a line where metal meets plastic. Is that line straight or does it have serrations (think of a ruffles chip)? If it's straight, it will work fine just make sure you don't tear anything off inside there. There was a newer style on later 4000's (and all 4050's) that provided better access to the paper path, with the old style it's possible to jam it bad enough to require service.

If I ran across the same deal I'd have jumped on it. They aren't that fast by today's standards but they are real workhorse printers.

The ones I've run were usually 500k to 1M pages... 90k is nothing.

Good deal. The best part of the deal is that you got the duplexer which they always charge too much for.

By the time you need a maintenance kit, you're probably better off just getting a new printer. Maintenence kits are also over expensive.

The 4000 is very short on ram if it's still in the factory default condition. Look into getting some more for that. It uses a funny sort of printer only ram.

To the OP, where I work we sell the 4000 with less then 50k for $100 with toner (used).

If you're in the area drop me a line.

EDIT: Nevermind just realized you already bought them.
