funny you posted this, OP. just ordered 2 of these (for a friend, as well) a week ago. feels better-built than my to-be-replaced X1000. granted, it's also smaller, so there's inherently less flex involved.

don't forget to apply for the APP (student discount) for those of you who apply.

Thanks, HA -- that Staples deal looks good, too, considering HP wants $50 for the extra 256MB. I was going to get the basic model from HP and plug in an extra gig chip, but I like the immediate gratification! I'll see if I can find any in-store coupons.

good of u to share the deal with us a week ago

There were two left at my local Staples. I had a 15 off 75 OD coupon from before the holidays, and the Staples mgr accepted it at 110% value (coupon pricematch policy?). So, I got my nb, and I like Staples. In CA I would've had to pay tax ordering from HP anyway.

No tax for most, plus free shipping. No interest/payments for 12-mos. I bought two.
I got a base model for $488 shipped, and a tricked out model for $692 shipped.

The same $692 model was going for $949 at circuit city, where I tried it out.

How much is the educational discount? If I browse the educational/gov link off of hp.com it doesn't show any of the low end notebooks.
