HP Laptop starts up by itself from a 'off' state

HP Probook 6545b, latest BIOS,
XP Pro w/sp3,
USB mouse, USB printer

Powers up from power off state, NOT from hibernate or standby,
Usually once a week on Saturday between approximate 12am & 7AM,

Programs auto updates: set to NO updates,
Wake on USB: OFF,
BIOS power on: OFF,
Wake on LAN; OFF,
Scanned for Viruses.

When I first checked the BIOS, I found "Wake on USB" checked which I unchecked. I checked my programs to see if updates were turned off which is one of the first things I do when I install a program. This brings me to the question: If the system is powered off, even if a program is set for auto updates, the system can't boot up from a off state can it??

Seems to me the only thing which could cause what you are experiencing has to be from the BIOS/CMOS. I would comb thru all of its settings and/or clear it just in case.

BTW, There are no HP diagnostic programs installed. This was a fresh non HP O/S install.

Also, the Laptop lid is closed. When I lift the lid and move the mouse, nothing happens. The screen stays dark. I have to hold the power button to shut it down. Any idea why it doesn't respond to the mouse movement??

hp's can be programmed to wake on various events; and even wake on a schedule. (business class).

off on a laptop is when the battery and power cord are removed lol.

everything else is on in some state of sleep.

The latest BIOS version F.06 (9 Jul 2010) added the auto power on feature. This would imply that there is a section in the BIOS to control whether the feature is on or off and allows a data and time to auto power on. If "BIOS power on:" is this new section try turning it on and see if the data/time matches when your laptop powers on. Also see if you can clear the date/time in this section. You also might want to download the latest HP Power Assistant to see if it has been updated to control the new auto power on feature.

If none of that works then go back to the previous BIOS version, F.05.

- Adds an "Auto Power-On" feature, which enables the notebook to automatically power itself on at a specific date and time.

How many tech forums did you post this in? LOL, you're all over the interweb. 😉

As many times as it takes to get as many answers as it takes to solve the problem. SOP.
It's called getting a 2nd (and more) opinion.

That 'Schedule' option has never been enabled and when I checked, none of the days or times are checked. I will look into that aspect though.

The interface for that auto power-on option may be software-based ACPI feature, the control of which you wiped out by installing a non-HP OS. e.g. HP Configuration and Tools software commonly found on its business notebooks

Might be available for download from HP somewhere.

The most recent Bios added a feature that I don't use and never touched that may be the issue. It is a 'schedule' power on (for what I don't know). I'm going to see if/when it does it again and if so, revert back to that Bios version.

This happens so infrequent, it's not worth any more troubleshooting time.
