I've got a desktop with spare SATA connectors and cables. I just bought an HP laptop (Pavillion DV6110US) that has a SATA hard drive. I have some stuff I want to do with the laptop drive that I could do better if it were in the desktop.

Is it possible to remove the hard drive from the laptop and plug it into my desktop?

Do I need power and/or data cable adaptors? If so, who sells them?

Thanks.

I am fairly certain that they are compatible, I have never personally tried, but when i pulled the drive out of my macbook, it appeared identical to the desktop connectors. So, give it a shot

I was thinking the same thing. I have a Dell E1505 and when I removed the 160gb SATA drive, I noticed the SATA and power connectors are identical to a standard full size drive. I would think it would work?

You guys are right. The connectors on a 2.5" SATA are exactly the same as on a 3.5" SATA drive. In the case of my HP, there is an adaptor connected that is removable revealing the standard SATA plugs. I plugged it into my desktop and Windows treated it the same as it would have a desktop hard drive.

Thanks

Great! Now if only the laptop OEMs would put an eSATA (external) port on their machines, life would be much better. :)
