I think it's BS. As much as I love WebOS, I don't think Palm is big enough to have had a tablet that close to being ready. And they certainly couldn't just "whip one up." Some of said it might be easy to just port WebOS over to x86 since it's just linux basically, but even then, I don't buy that it could be done so fast.

No doubt HP is going to put out a WebOS tablet, but I'm guessing a year from now, earliest.

However, if this were for a new webOS phone, I'd believe it. In fact, I'd say they have to have something by fall or take a final blow in this mobile game, tablet or not.

Nobody said Palm had a tablet ready, but they may have been playing around with WebOS on other form factors/resolutions, and HP brought the hardware to the table and is basically saying "put this (WebOS) on that (Slate)". Not hard to think it wouldn't take that long to make it work.

Playing around on maybe, but I don't think they would have had the resources to have really gained any ground. Then again, I'm assuming they wanted to focus on the smartphone market first. Given they haven't said a word about any new phone, it's quite possible then. All they'd need was money and manufacturing. But Q3 ends Sept 30. That is REALLY short.

They do not want to rush this. They need to get this right. And they need more developers to push the platform. Not that I need much more for a tablet, but to compete against android and iPhone OS....

You don't think HP has adequate resources? They have ~$100B revenue and $14B of cash. I think they can make it happen.

They need a new phone badly, the Pre is dated and is due for replacement. At least if they want to survive in that market space. Yes, it is just now coming out on some carriers but it's been out for around a year now. They can't wait until fall to get somethign out. Waiting until after the Incredible, EVO, and iphone is just a horrible horrible move.

You can't just throw money at a problem. If they want to get the tablet done right, they need to push, but not go rushing like madmen. It takes time to develop and test. I don't think Palm could have done anything extensive in that realm yet.

Who knows, maybe I'm wrong. But I'll be damn surprised if they come out with a good tablet by Sept 30th. I'll give them they could push something out, but if they do, it'll be like the Pre. Heavy on the first gen; light on learning from the past.

Agreed, but they launched right before the iPhone, and got sucked out of the light real fast. Granted, the Pre is no "iPhone killer," but still, it's no doubt going to get compared to the tooth.

Now everyone keeps thinking that Palm needs to port the OS to the tablet. What keeps HP from using the ARM processor, or modifying the hardware to be compatible with the OS with minimal coding required? I'm no expert when it comes to WebOS or hardware though, so I'm just throwing it out there.

HP could also go with a third party ARM tablet design, and switch it from Android to WebOS, at least as a stopgap to get into tablet game. There could be Chinese companies with their own design and manufacturing but who are looking for a US distribution partner like HP. So don't assume HP would need to design hardware from scratch even if they decide to go with ARM instead of X86.
