Sam's Club have a HP xf125 notebook PC for $949.98. "Thinnest and lightest notebook in its class". The specs are:

AMD Duron? 1GHz
384MB PC133 SDRAM
20GB HD
8X DVD-ROM
14.1" XGA
Via ProSavage AGP 3D graphics
Li-Ion battery
Built-in 56K (V.90) modem and 10/100 NIC
Weight 6.5lb
Microsoft® Windows® XP Home Edition

Standard shipping is cheap at about $8 but you'll probably have to pay your state tax. Not available in store AFAIK.

😀
I was just at our Sam's checking this Duron XF125 notebook out. It looks like a warm deal. It does have 384mb RAM which should keep XPHome happy. A nice Lithium Ion battery; DVD (although not a burner); NIC and modem built-in. Two open Type II slots. 20GB HD and 14.1 TFT. Looks fairly complete except for no burner. I'm needing a lappy to upgrade from my Celery466 Acer Travelmate and this sounds fairly good. Are there any HP rebates or coupons that would make this Sam's deal even warmer? What am I missing here, you lappy deal watchers?

I also saw the big brother on that shelf, the HP Pavillion XF145. For $1200 you get 1Ghz Athlon4, Lithium, 512mb RAM, 20GB, 14.1TFT, CDRW/DVD, built-in NIC & modem, and preloaded XPHome. I'm thinking these upgrades might be worth the extra $250. What do ya'll think?

I ended up buying an HP ZT1130 which does have a cd burner. It doesn't have a floppy drive but you get a full rebate for a USB floppy with the laptop. I got it from BestBuy online for $1199 - 2 x $100 MIR = $999 (+ tax on $1199). In store pick-up next day with no S&H to pay. Not as good a deal now though. I saw it in CompUSA today for $1399 after a rebate and they had it advertised as though they were giving it away - suckers beware! BTW I spent a couple of weeks looking at notebook PCs and I think cdrw's are pretty much standard now and don't demand a big premium.

If you are smart you can get a good bargain on UBid.com on the manufacturer refrubs that are sold by Ubid themselves (not third parties or private sales!). I bought one for the wife and it was like new - no problems. Just be sure to set a price for yourself that you consider is a good deal and stick with it. It may take quite a few auctions but you'll eventually get what you want. My advice is to go for machines with mobile Intel chips since the others have a short battery life which can defeat the reason for having a laptop.

Good Luck!

I was considering that HPZT1130 for a while. But from what I've read on reviews the vid card is suck. But if you dont care about stuff like that then its a great price. Theyve been sellng them for $1199 (before 2x $100 rebates) for a while at best buy and circuit city. And as for having a burner come with, its amazing how quickly burners are becoming a standard. Just 6 months ago it was a $200 add on but now they all have it. The only problem with it is the burning speed. 4x is just too slow nowadays.

The burner on the ZT1130 is actually an 8x8x24x Sony CRX800E, but yes the video does suck. I had to set it to 16-bit color (from 32 bit) so that the video on my avi movies could keep up with the sound. This was a big mistake by HP to use this chipset (S3 Twister, aka SavagePro) I think, especially to have it in the high-end of the ZT range. I don't mind the video being sluggish given the price I paid, but had I paid double the amount I'd be returning it for refund as others have done. Another annoyance is the fact that they put 2 x 128MB sodimms in it rather than one 256MB and leaving one slot for upgrade. In their defence though they do state very clearly that this is the case. All in all I'm very happy with it because it does what I need it to do... and then some.

Yeah. if not for that video card then that is one hot notebook. But about the burner. Its an 8x? Thats great! It really is a good buy because that laptop is really light (5.3lbs) and to me thats a huge benefit. Some of those bargain laptops are okay but they weigh around 7lbs and are such a pain to lug around. (And before anyone says "its just a few ounces, whats the big deal?" then you'd be amazed how how much difference a few ounces makes.)

Anyway, i bought the toshiba 3005-s307 which has a great vid card and great reviews but im returning it because its just really loud with the fan and gets awful hot. Im settling with the compaq 1722us (8MB radeon card inside. a bit skimpy but good enough for CS)

I need a spare laptop, mainly for editing documents, so I don't need a powerful machine. Something around or north of 400 Mhz would be ample. $950 is not my idea of cheap. I've seen some cheapies in the high $500s, but nothing that does it for me.

Question: Where's a good place to buy cheap laptops?

😱
Darn, I guess the Athlon4 and Duron HP lappies must be regional. I sure was standing right there inspecting them on the shelf (Birmingham, AL).

Do you guys have anything bad to say about recent HP Pavilion laptops, like unreliability or such? I am considering one for non-gaming, so the graphics speed is not going to kill me.

They aren't on the web. Try the service desk. That's where they keep a lot of goodies, including some clearance stuff.

If you are looking for a laptop. There should be some good prices and maybe rebates on the HP and Compaq laptops with teh Athlon 4 and Duron, as the NEW T-Bred chip is out. Compaq is already taking orders with the T-Bred chip that DOES have 512kb L2 cache.
I think, might be wrong so check it out, that the Athlon 4 1600+ or faster is the NEW T-Bred.

And if you don't already know the T-Bred chip is AMD's new .13 micron chip that has 512kb L2 cache. Should be faster and run cooler with less power.

😎
The Duron and Athlon4 deals I described were just as I wrote them down from stock on the shelf at our Birmingham, AL Sam's. Others have not found them, so I guess they must be regional deals.

The www.BestBuy.com HP ZT1130 deal is back for $999 (+ tax) after $200 in mail-in rebates. It also comes with a coupon for a free USB floppy drive. IMO this is the best value notebook deal out there at the moment.

I have benchmarked the cpu (1.13GHz Celeron) and it's as fast as a P4 1.6GHz albeit with reduced memory bandwidth. The video card is suitable for non-demanding stuff - playing movies (avi, dvd) is fine. And remember, you can do next-day in-store pick-up.
