HP Deskjet 5550 $100 AC/AR maybe less after PM @ Staples

Staples has a deal right now where if you buy an HP 5500 you get a 20 Gift Check after rebate. I'm not sure what a Gift Check is but if it is just like a normal rebate then that would take it down to 129.99. Then you can use the $30 off $150 going around i takes it to $100. I also noticed that Circuit City has this printer for 129.99 so if you are able to price match and use a 20 off 100 and the rebate you get it for 90. This is one of the better printers out there according to many review sites. I'd like to get one but running a little low on funds right now good luck too all.

First, it's the 5550, not 5500. (5500 is a color laser, and that's sure not selling for $100!)

Second, I checked cnet.com and they gave it a 7/10, saying it was slow and poor photo quality. You had me all excited (I'm watching for a good cheap photo printer) but alas, I think I shall pass. Thanks for the heads-up though!

I bought this printer a couple of months ago and I think cnet was using the old drivers. With the new print drivers from HP this printer is faster and prints photos awesome even without the optional photo cartridge. I'm still waiting for my $30 gift card from OM.

You can go to http://www.ink-refills.com/ and get ink refills.

I've got this printer and it actually produces excellent photos. Your not going to get any better for this price (4800X1200 dpi). It does take its time printing photos, but who's in a hurry? It even does 4x6 borderless photos. The Cnet review did say though that the photo quality is better than the HP Photomart 7150 (the one actually designed and marketed to be a photo printer). I got mine at CC a while ago for $129.99. Besides the fact that I need a seperate desk to put this sucker on (it's pretty damn big, like a spaceship), it's a great printer.

Tikerz & tse200: What's your opinion of this one for general printing? Do you use it for everything or just photos? If it's good enough for all-around use, I may consider it... I've got a 952c currently and it's great for text, but not the best at photos. Now that I've got a digital camera, I'd like to print more of them... So I'm considering it... Also, does it do two-sided without the duplex adaptor (like the older deskjets can do - print one side, then wait while I stick the paper back in to do the other)? I use that feature a lot, but not enough to justify the cost of the automatic duplexer.

All printers can "duplex".

Example, you have a 10 page MS-Word document you want to print.

1st: Print only the "odd pages"
2nd: re-insert the paper correctly (orientation depends on printer feed mechanism).
3rd: Print only the "even page"

That's it....duplex.

I have a Color Laser I use at work, I do this all the time on it.....easy. (It's an HP 4550...great for manuals n' stuff...not photos..only 600x600dpi).

Its a great printer, but it sure is SLOWWWWWW. about 10x slower then the canon s750, but better looking for sure.

Duplexing using the manual feed tray is NOT the same as duplexing using a duplexing unit.

It will usually work, but don't call me complaining if it screws up your fuser.

In reply to DBoy, I actually got this printer specifically for photo printing after my son's recent birth. I upgraded from an HP 930C. I have used it for other things like printing coupons out of Hot Deals 😉
