HP Debranded AMD Athlon 64X2 Dual Core 4200+ 1GB 250GB DVDRW

X2 4200 system

The reason this is a great deal for me is I need to build my GF a system and I wanted to upgrade mine.

I have Opt144 in my system now and I wanted to go to X2
I have 80GB hard and wanted to go to a 200GB+
I need a TV tuner card for my HTPC.

So basicly I will strip down the parts I want from this system and put in my old parts.
My system will much better, will my GF will have a very decent system.

Any comments?

EDIT:
They charge shipping. $31 for me.

Holy crap. Exactly what I was looking for (I think?) shame it's only a 1x1GB stick. I'd em up picking up another if I buy the rig.

EDIT: Err, no specs on the ram? Aw.

It's a good deal, but just note a couple of things. It's socket 939 and the RAM is one stick, so you need another stick to take advantage of dual-channel RAM. (I assume the ATI chipset board does dual channel?).

Doesn't say if the ram is dual channel or not. =[ Boo S939.

That brings up a question I have. If a board does dual channel, is it better to have 2 sticks of 512MB in dual channel or 1 stick of 1GB ram in a single channel?

2x512 Dual Channel. Two sticks are always better than one.

what about 4 sticks (4x512mb) versus 2 sticks (2x1gb)?

refurbished don't both me with this system. 99% of these systems was send back becuase the Tv tuner did owrk right. It was actually a software bug, that is now fixed.
Plus I'm parting it out anyway so the warranty is going to do me much good.

After more search I'm almsot sure the Ram is 2 sticks. I know it says one. But HP site has the exact same system and all of them have 1GB of ram with 2 sticks. I call geeks and they have no clue what is in them. Them never open them up and just go by what was sent. My guess they just read the sheet wrong.

Plus even if it 1 stick its no big deal. My girl friend doesn't play games, so at most she have to wait 20 secs more to burn a dvd. The rest is just web browsing.

Four (4) DIMM sockets (one occupied)
One stick.

For those buying for others, note it says it does not come with WinXP - you have to provide your own copy. Bit unusual i'd say for HP. They must be reselling the xp copies lol

OS and documentation are NOT included

That's perfect for me. Even more tempting. I wish I could buy a Dell without Windows.

There's no OS because it's refurbished and debranded. It's not being sold by HP nor as an HP machine, so HP isn't obligated to provide an OS. And Geeks wants to sell the full copies rather than bundling.

The reason why the TV turner is not metioned is the orginal turned was pulled on most systems then replaced. Some was replaced with the same type once the problem was fixed, and others got other type. Since they have no clue they left it out.

Geeks can't sell OEM verison of software. They are selling the same system at HP with the software for more then Geeks is selling. Geeks get on software at all, not even disk for the free junk. Thats why the cost is low.

I do my research 🙂

PS
Just because it says only 1 dimm is occupied doesn't mean its true.
They also say thye have 3 PCI open and then say the baord has 5 slot and only 1 occupied. They also never say anything about the modem (its in 1 PCI slot).
Geeks has no clue. I'm willing to bet its 2x512.
I'm ordering it now, so I will let you know.

two sticks are better than four. but only marginally so... at least on socket 939.

Thanks for taking one for the team. Please PM me, or something, with the results (Is it dual channel, 2x512, etc). I'll favourite this thread. =D

Check your local big-name stores and their websites. Similar HP systems (possibly with 2GB or RAM and Tuners), OS, all accessories and warranty can be found for not much more and might actually go on clearance.

I got in on the previous Acer x2 3800 deal for $399, but it came with MS MCE 2005. It was a refurb, too, and I had a huge USB prob, finally solved inadvertently. When I was considering sending it back I checked the Acer site for warranty and it said the REFURB warranty on my particular serial number had run out 2 days BEFORE I bought it from Geeks. I don't know if that meant this was the second go-around for this refurb or not. I got lucky and got the prob solved - it took almost four weeks and innumerable posts on various forums coupled with a last chance desperation lucky break. Refurbs are really rolling the dice: sometimes you get lucky, and other times......

I dont know if Geek is trying to be shady or what. They removed the reference to a tv tuner from the page. It was in this paragraph.

With the versatile DVDRW drive you can access media, backup data, burn CDs and even watch DVDs! With the built-in media card reader you can easily access a variety of media cards.

Its on its way to me now so I let you know when I get it.

Any else remember it saying their was a TV tuner?
