Cannot believe they swapped my motherboard in my NW8000 and I now have a ATI 9600 vs the FireGL T2 128mb that I had. Now have to wait 3 more days for them to come back out and fix it.

Yeah been trying to find some real spec differences and can't really find a big difference but I believe I lost my built in bluetooth as well, which I do use with my phone to sync.

Found out by running the diags from Compaq they replaced my board with a nc8000 instead of the nw8000 which is a totally different platform far as I can tell.

yep. If they don't make your paticualr board anymore, they need to replace it with something comparable. The video card is probably comparable, but no bluetooth is bad.

I would take a USB bluetooth dongle as a substitute. It would be far more handy in the future than built into the board.

The video cards may have comparable hardware, but the FireGL is optimised for 3d content creation. Big difference if the computer is for work, and not play.

Dudes, the Ati mobility 9600 is NOTHING like the FireGL T2 card. FireGL has 8 pipes vs. 4 in the 9600. FireGL is also clocked higher. 9600 can have 64 OR 128-bit memory. FireGL is quaranteed to have 128-bits.
Make sure you get the FireGL!!!

Actually, they are both based on the 9600 chipset, and thus have 4 pixel pipelines (I don't know about clock speeds). But at any rate, you would definitely want the T2 since it is a workstation class card.

The main difference in workstation vs gaming/regular tasks are the drivers. The t2 would be worse at gaming, but better at cad/graphic design.

true, but the fireGL is artificially priced higher, so that gives you the right to complain if they didnt give you your fireGL back.

sigh...I miss my NC8000, it was the best laptop I'd ever owned. Had to give it back when I left the last company I worked for. Other than that I have nothing to contribute to this thread besides a bump which really doesn't mean much since it's already at the top...sorry ;)

They finally got it right on the 3rd time. Compaq/HP is odd, all the motherboards they kept swapping had the exact same spare part number so I have no clue how they tell the difference between the two.
