Lol it says

I]Use the drive to create, share, and store data, photos, music, and more on high capacity CDs. Includes software to get you started burning CDs right away.[/i]

I like it though....I am going to get 2 for birthday gifts for friends. They don't know or care about speed.

status: CBO - item in backorder

I just went through & ordered and did not get any notice that it is out of stock or back ordered. I have 2 confirmation E-mails on my order. The first confirmed my order & the 2nd states that my order has been sent to the delivery center. 'XFreebie', did you get a third E-mail telling you that it is back ordered, or did you get it on the site? I have not recieved any notice that it is backordered.

on the checkout page it'll say either CBO or OPN. OPN means its in stock and ready to ship next day and CBO means its backordered. i remember this cuz of that iomega deal last year and it was CBO and never got it. i also used a $25 off coupon on the iomega deal and they sent me the stuff i bought to get it over $100 but they didnt send me the 2 iomega drives and they charged me w/o applying the coupon

I got 'OPN' on my checkout. They must have them back in stock (or it is a regional thing -- some areas have them, others do not).

I wouldn't bother with a 8x at this point either. I just replaced this very drive with a 24x Liteon and what a world of difference. Not only can I burn in half the time, I have burn-proof and I can make copies of stuff that I couldn't make with the HP using Clone CD.

Yes, I agree about the Lite-on, but some folks don't want to wait (or refuse to deal with) rebates required to get the drive at that price, and we all know you can get at least $40.00 for the second drive on Ebay so I would still call this a hot deal (for some)

CompUSA has 24X burners this week for $49 after MIR. They have burn-proof technology too.

The old 8X HP's aren't worth it anymore

For all of you that want faster burners, I agree. I personally use and enjoy the deal I got on the Plextor 40x12x40. ($138 shipped)

But, if you are like me, and build numerous systems for next to nothing, you can't beat the deal. One thing to consider is the fact that now I can offer my residential customers a burner for not much more than they would pay for a regular cd-rom. . . And that, folks, is just the competitive edge I need with my cheapskate clientele.

LOL you guys are ridiculous. 3 minutes of waiting for the cds to finish is too much of a hassle? When i was your age i had a 2X burner when it was twice as much as one of the most expensive 40X out now and it took me half an hr to burn one cd. LOL
this is a pretty descent deal for gifts or someone who just needs a burner and doesnt care too much about the speed.

good find

Warning to those of you thinking of picking these up for a cheap CDR in unsophisticated user's machine-this burner will not have burn-proof or anything like it, so they will end up making a lot of coasters. That feature alone is worth spending the $25 or so more to get a 24x burner.

I would also research who actually manufactured the drive. HP switched vendors a lot, but in that era they were using Sony mechanisms a lot-which had lots of problems with burning backups of copy protected discs.

Personally I'd spend the few extra bucks for a LiteOn 24x or 32x, probably at NewEgg. That's what I put in relative's computers and they are happy.

I've never had a problem with any of my 5 previous HP CDRW drives. They all work(ed) great with CloneCD

My Cendyne rebate took weeks to get. Pretty painless if you ask me. I've had burners all the way back to 2x as well and I can tell you a 24x burner makes a difference over a 8x. I used to have to just walk away from the computer before, but now I can continue to work on the computer with the burn proof and 4 minutes is MUCH better than 9.

I do agree with the fact about buying 2 and Ebaying one though. I just wouldn't want to have to use a 8x burner without burn proof again personally. Plus.. With the Liteon, I was able to burn a few things that I couldn't burn with my HP drive and it pretty much paid for itself if you know what I mean. ;)
