HP 7800

I have a little problem. I have an HP 7800 Desktop running Windows ME. When I turn on,

I get the following:

Microsoft Windows Millennium Startup Menu

1. Normal
2. Logged
3. Safe
4. Step-by step configuration

Whatever I do, a blue screen pops up and I get

"Windows Protection Error. You need to restart computer. System halted"

in the middle of the screen.

When I do restart, it takes my right back to the same screen.
Any ideas--I cannot make it back to my desktop.

Please help. My wife was messing around with the computer, but im not sure exactly what she did. THanks for any help

Try booting the PC into SAFE MODE.
(hold down the CTRL key while turning the PC ON)

If it still Blue Screens, their more than likely is a problem
with the REGISTRY.

You can try booting with a ME bootdisk and doing a Registry Restore.
Type C:\Windows\Command\scanreg /restore

Also, make sure to unplug any USB or Serial devices.

Windows ME bootdisk

So all I do is save to floppy and boot up with it in the system. Where and when do I type C:\Windows\Command\scanreg /restore.

And is there supposed to be a space after the g in scanreg and is that the correct way for the slash, or should I change that to match the others? Thanks for your help.

You need to Execute the file download to make the Bootdisk.

Boot with the Windows ME bootdisk and
choose option #4 (minimal boot)

At the A:\ prompt is where to type
(A:\c:\windows\command\scanreg /restore)
[space in between g and forward slash]
