HP 6500 cd doesn't detect

Hi, I had an HP Pavillion 6500(333mhz cpu). After a while it stopped detecting the cd-drive in windows. I know it is a slow computer, but it is only a little over 2 years old! Is the cd-rom just dead or is it something else? I have gotten a new computer(1.2ghz athlon!) since this piece of crap died, but I would like to see if I can still get it to work.
