HP 4000 Laser printer problems.

I have a friend that does not want to get rid of his Old HP 4000 LJ printer....the thing has worked great forever...he recently upgraded his computer and it did not have a parallel port so we hooked it up via USB with a Parallel - USB adapter. the problem is that I can not get it to keep working well....It will work great for a little while then it just prints really slow and sometimes prints jarble ..I have tried alot of different drivers but I can not get it to print consistantly ...It almost seems seems to keep defaulting to a bad driver or something...

any Ideas ..???

I have the same printer, and it performs perfectly. What I did was install a LAN card in the printer, and then use it as a network printer with 3 machines with Cat 5 cable - XP, Vista, and Win 7. Nary a problem that way.
