HP 3820 printer problem

Working on a Dell Dimension 2400 (P4) with 2 printers - #1 is working fine from the LPT1 port; #2 is an HP 3820 color inkjet hooked to a USB port. It worked fine in the past, but something has recently caused a problem. I've uninstalled & re-installed the drivers several times, without success. WinXP Home w/ SP2 recognizes it, but during driver installation I get : 'Unable to start the application - The Java Virtual Machine cannot be loaded.' This PC is used by a novice, who has loaded weatherbug, SpyHunter and other worthless crap. It also had/has numerous spyware/adware infections. I ran updated NAV, installed & ran MS Antispyware Beta, and AdAware. I also get this during boot up : 'Invalid BackWeb application id "7288971".' Not sure if this is the problem, but I'm looking into it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's not my PC. I doubt if the owner would want to start over; he's not all that inconvienced by this problem.

Sounds like Java is not installed properly and more than likely the installer for the printer uses Java.

He shouldn't be running the MS Java VM anyway. Go to www.java.com and load the latest Sun JAVA.
