HP 2133 for $299 AR , 1gb ram 120gb drive

Not much good for anything else. For $100 more, you can wait for a laptop deal that features something along the lines of Intel Mobile Pentium Dual-Core, far superior graphics, 2GB RAM, 15" WXGA, DVD writer, and higher capacity battery. Best Buy, Circuit City, OfficeMax, and others periodically reprise the killer $399 laptop deal for holiday-oriented sale events.

Yes, but that's a desktop replacement not a netbook. 😛

Excellent price, however Via CPU, 9" screen (along with 1280 resolution), high heat (110F on the bottom) and high noise according to reviews are hard to ignore.

I'm still waiting on a netbook with Acer Aspire One features/specs with fanless operation and good heat profile.

Don't hold your breath. Every single netbook currently on the market comes with a fan. I don't expect it to change in the near future. Maybe once netbooks move onto integrated memory controller that may become possible, but that's not going to happen for another year.

I read that the Dell Inspiron Mini 9 is completely passively cooled on a few different articles and reviews. I haven't had one in hand and verified it, but I'm almost positive there are no fans in it.

AnandTech's own review of it states this, and I'm sure it's true.

Still, it would be nice to use a chipset which uses less power than the CPU...

Intel's chipset designed to go with the atom used IDE in order to save power. That's one of the reasons manufacturer's chose a different chipset to pair with it. It would be nice to see someone utilize that chipset and maybe put a different southbridge chip in with a SATA controller on it.

There was no choice. The single-chip system controllers designed for Atom are only suitable for ultra mobile designs, MIDs, and embedded systems.

Currently, there are only two chipsets Intel allows board makers to use with Atom; the mobile 945GSE and desktop 945GC. Laptop manufacturers are required to use 945GSE. For that matter, I believe the reason all current 'netbook' type laptops for Atom are essentially identical is because they are all using the Intel 945GSE reference board. Mini-ITX or MATX board manufacturers are free to use either 945GSE or 945GC.

not everyone needs all that crap, this thing is tiny, but still very usable. 15" notebooks are bulky and cumbersome, if that's what you want, great, but you can't really compare that to this thing. it's the size of a book. it does get fairly hot, but i don't consider it noisy.

The Dell Mini Inspiron doesn't have a fan.

I would jump on this deal if it had the VIA Nano though.... the C7 is sllooooooooww

i have a friend who has the 2133 and its plenty fast for most things

apparently the main problem with heat on it is fixed by removing the mesh grills on its exhaust vents. my friend did that and it was much cooler running.

most of the reviews that say it runs hot are of the highest end version that has the 1.6 ghz c7 and runs vista.

the 1.2 is cooler obviously.

I don't disagree. Smaller or lighter is good, so long as features or performance are not meaningfully sacrificed. The point at which that occurs will be different for different users.

I lugged around a 8lb 17" laptop for 3 years and replaced it with a 6lb 15" laptop. This would be nice just to carry around to meetings for taking notes, checking Email, and web browsing. Best part is that it's running SLED so it can even do wireless network analysis with Wireshark. (windows tcp stack is a little less capable for wireless packet sniffing)

I didn't realize the rebate expired on the 30th or I would have definitely picked one up for that price. Maybe I'll snag the next deal on these that comes along or try to pick up a refurb if any surface.
