Not much good for anything else. For $100 more, you can wait for a laptop deal that features something along the lines of Intel Mobile Pentium Dual-Core, far superior graphics, 2GB RAM, 15" WXGA, DVD writer, and higher capacity battery. Best Buy, Circuit City, OfficeMax, and others periodically reprise the killer $399 laptop deal for holiday-oriented sale events.Originally posted by: TheShiz
i have one, that's a good deal. it's great if you just want something portable to surf the web on

Excellent price, however Via CPU, 9" screen (along with 1280 resolution), high heat (110F on the bottom) and high noise according to reviews are hard to ignore.

Don't hold your breath. Every single netbook currently on the market comes with a fan. I don't expect it to change in the near future. Maybe once netbooks move onto integrated memory controller that may become possible, but that's not going to happen for another year.

I read that the Dell Inspiron Mini 9 is completely passively cooled on a few different articles and reviews. I haven't had one in hand and verified it, but I'm almost positive there are no fans in it.
There was no choice. The single-chip system controllers designed for Atom are only suitable for ultra mobile designs, MIDs, and embedded systems.Originally posted by: datwater
Intel's chipset designed to go with the atom used IDE in order to save power. That's one of the reasons manufacturer's chose a different chipset to pair with it.

I don't disagree. Smaller or lighter is good, so long as features or performance are not meaningfully sacrificed. The point at which that occurs will be different for different users.Originally posted by: TheShiz
not everyone needs all that crap, this thing is tiny, but still very usable. 15" notebooks are bulky and cumbersome, if that's what you want, great, but you can't really compare that to this thing. it's the size of a book. it does get fairly hot, but i don't consider it noisy.

I lugged around a 8lb 17" laptop for 3 years and replaced it with a 6lb 15" laptop. This would be nice just to carry around to meetings for taking notes, checking Email, and web browsing. Best part is that it's running SLED so it can even do wireless network analysis with Wireshark. (windows tcp stack is a little less capable for wireless packet sniffing)Originally posted by: tcsenter
