Howto: Block ads in Facebook

I recently discovered Adblock Plus and NoScript and I think it's made using the internet so much better.

I looked around for a while on how to remove the ads from facebook and it seems like the information I found no longer works, so I took a few seconds to figure out how to block the ads.

Add these filters to Adblock Plus to remove the ads from facebook without messing up the formatting of the site:

facebook.com#*(adcolumn_advertise)
facebook.com#*(adcolumn_more_ads)
facebook.com#*(ssponsor)
 
so Piracy's illegal and shunned badly here, but ways around blocking ad's on sites when it's how the site makes it's revenue, hay that's fine lol.

You know...if advertisements bother you that much, you shouldn't be on the internet. There wouldn't be an ATOT, facebook, etc. without ads. The only websites where ads truly bother me are the horrid flash sites that have the flashing 100x100 boxes...and I don't go on those sites anyways.

but but but.... the ad's annoy them, and there's a zero percent chance they'd ever buy the product, or even click on the ad for that matter.

Sounds just like the people who condone why they pirate. Sadly ad blocking in the long run will lead to less and less free sites. I'll be thanking all you ad blocking ass clowns when I have to pay for a site like Facebook in 5 years.

That logic would be great and all, except phone surveys call you. But people CHOOSE to go to Facebook and similar sites. And those people CHOOSE to block the ad's. If the ad's bother them that much, they should find a new site to go to that doesn't have ad's. The companies who pay to have ad's on Facebook don't pay so people can block the ad's. If you're not going to ever buy shit from an ad, fine that's up to you. But the least you can do is ignore the ad and allow it to stay on the screen.

Ad blocking is the same as piracy regardless how the idiots who run ad blockers attempt to justify it.

What would make for an interesting discussion is the difference between static or unobtrusive moving ads vs. annoying flashing, pop-up, pop-under, float-over and noisy (or any combination thereof) ads.

I do not mind static ads and some ads with movement. The rest of them deserve to burn in hell. Does anyone really buy from a company that posts annoying ads?

Uh, how is blocking an ad (which is not illegal) the same as pirating something? Not even the RIAA is stupid enough to not be able to tell the difference.
 
People have a right to block ads on their PC unless they agree to a legally binding TOS agreement. If you use a free site that is ad supported, you shouldn't (to be courteous, and support the site) block their ads, though, especially if they're reasonable and there aren't too many of them.

I don't watch TV except maybe once every 2-3 months, but the last show I watched was on TBS and it had some sort of ad's right on the screen during the show. I loved the idea I hope all TV channels start doing this, because that is how they make their money too. The rare times I do watch network television, unless I gotta pee yes I watch the commericals. Ad's do annoy me but they're there for a reason. I pay for HBO and I don't have to see ad's, see how that works??

to darkswordsman17 I meant on an ethical level, if you can sleep with yourself blocking ad's, fine but it's not ethical at all.

Yeah, because its not like you're already paying for cable/satellite, right? By your logic DVRs should be illegal because not only is it blocking someone's ads, its paying someone else money to do it.

What is the purpose the ads vis-a-vis myself if I never look at them, never click on them and never buy anything through them?

The only time I "look" at an ad, is when it is annoying, and then I simply note to not buy from that company or that product in the future. For someone like me, ads are a lose/lose proposition for the advertisers.

And, yes, I know, if everyone was like me, we would have to pay for more websites. Then again, if more people were like me, advertisers would advertise smarter instead of more annoyingly (and there would be no spam, too).
