So this murray mower I bought last with with a B&S engine is still not running properly (original thread- it ran for about 30 min but tonight i can't keep it going again without constantly hitting the primer). I'm going to soak the carburator for a few months in pure carb cleaner, but if that doesn't work, how does the warranty work? It's only a $140 mower and I can't see being able to just take it to some authorized place for free service, would they?

After you cut the front lawn, just shut it off and leave it for the garbage men.:)

Well.. how long is the warranty on the engine through the store? How long through the manufacturer? How long is the warranty on the deck? Through the store, manufacturer?

If the engine warranty is through the store, take it there. If it's through the manufacturer, you should be able to take it to any authorized Briggs small engine place.

Be warned though, there may be some scruitiny. If they see that you have taken the carburetor off, they will deny warranty service. Since they may be backlogged(won't work on the unit right then), they may even just do the work anyway, and charge you without calling you and telling you they denyed warranty service first. ;)

You have to read the waranty to see what it entail, but tampering with it has void your warranty.

Take it to a shop & see how much it is going to cost fixing, other wise purchase an electric mower.

PS. You can't over clock your mower & expect the store to take it back ;)

B&S has a one year warranty but doesn't cover the plug or the electronic spark module. Sounds to me like a carb problem and a local guy could probably fix it for $20.00. Just my .02. At least the above was true when I worked retail a few years ago.

If you get lucky and get a truely mom& pop shop.. Maybe.

More than likely, he'll get charged at least one hour labor(45 - 75$), plus parts, and there will be a wait because of the time of year.

Heh.. I should go into the small engine repair business, part-year. It's really dead in the winter, but it booms in the summer. It's easy work.

:D

Electric mower! I'd be laughed out of the neighborhood ;0

I doubt they could tell that I've taken the thing apart...

Damn man I should have bought the damn Honda. Oh well, it was like $400 :( I've only used this one for 2/3 of a season too!

i was kidding about the electric toy :)

I got a Briggs 6.5 hp 2 months ago with 14" wheels from Sears at $299 CAD (was on sale at 30% off), and the equivalent Honda was $650.

My sister have a 6.5 Honda & it lasted her less than 5 years. The rear wheel compleately worn off because it is a self propel.

What would you do though? The carburator is totally cleaned out. I was just having cleaner spraying from all holes. the damn thing is pristine. I'm going to give it a new plug and air filter next.

Heh. I have a cheap-ass Murray I bought in 1992 for $99.00 with a 3.5 B&S and it has never let me down. You get good ones and bad ones.

There IS a local Mom & Pop that only charges $20.00 an hour less than a mile from my place...

Damn I can't imagine how they stay open :Q

Really low overhead for one and high-volume as well. He doesn't sell anything new. Just fixes old ones. I got a Ryobi Line trimmer repaired for $40 plus parts last year. He also shapens saw chains for 50 cents a link. :Q

I suggest leaving it in your front yard overnight, of course it wont be there the next morning.

Use the check from your homeowners insurance to go buy a new mower.

If you lived closer, I'd fix it for the cost of parts. :)

I'd just rebuild the carburetor. A carb kit will probably run about 15$.

There is no reason why it should be having problems after only one season. I'd say its probably a lemon.

The type of carburetor the engine has relies on a perfect seal between the carburetor and tank, because it uses a diagraphm pump. If there is a mis-seal, or a pinhole in the diaphram, it could be a cause of the symptoms you're experiencing.

If you bought it at Home Depot, find your recipt and bring it back, and exchange it for a new one. They will do it, no sweat. If you can't find your reciept, do it anyway. They will getcha a new one if they still have that model, which they likely do. Trust me, I should know :p
