How's this setup?

I'm about to finally do a major (all components but the floppy) upgrade (last one in 97). I'll be spending the same amount of money I did in 97, but back then all I got was 32MB of ram, a K6-233, an Asus board, case, and maybe one or two other things :p

Does anyone have a similar configuration to the one below and if so, is it fairly stable? I'm not really concerned with OC'ing it, I need rock solid stability (running win2k).

Abit KG7 Raid
Tbird 1.4 retail
2x256MB Crucial PC2100
Gainward GeForce 3 CardExpert w/ TV-OUT, VIVO, DVI
IBM Deskstar 60GXP
SB Live! Value
ENERMAX EG465P-VE 431W Power supply
TOSHIBA DVD ROM, 16X DVD, 48X CD ROM
3COM 905CX-TXNM PCI 10/100
Buslink USB 4x CDR
**Can you recommend a fair priced Hardware PCI 56k modem?**

I seem to remember an issue with the Live card and the Via southbridge, is this still a problem? Any insight into this system would be really appreciated. I've been researching for days (read more reviews than I can count), but I've been out of the loop for quite a while. I'm still reading up on all the drivers I'll need, I've heard of an AGP fix for AMD, some Via drivers, etc. What a pain! :D

TIA

Sounds good, but IBM drives have had a lot of problems lately regarding reliability, you might want to go with Maxtor or something like that.

Excellent system setup dude.

Thanks. Haven't most of the problems been with the 75GXP drives? Or are people having equal problems with the 60GXP?

i have almost the exact same setup,
KG7-R,
1.4 Athlon,
samsung 265MB DDR,
IBM 40GB,
Gainward geforce 3 w/DVI VIVO,
SB live 5.1 Xgamer,
ENERMAX 350W Power supply
TOSHIBA DVD ROM, 16X DVD, 48X CD ROM
3COM 905CX-TXNM PCI 10/100

somethings's not going right with either CPU, motherboard or ram. it crashes when running 3dmark2001 and scores really badly with 3dmard2000. i've tested with another geforce2 mx and although it doesn't crash, it scores really poorly. i'm still working trying to find out what's the problem...

as for your question about soundcard and the southbridge.. yes there's a problem but i think it's between the raid controller and the soundcard, it's an easy fix.. i disabled the sound card emulator driver (can't remember the exact name) so it doesn't boot up.. now it works fine... (it used to crash when booting up)

good luck with your system, i'm sure it'll rock!

Looks good, but there's a huge thing with KG7. Some people have had they're AGP cards destroyed by the board (One guy, ToBeMe, lost a GF3!:Q:( ). So until that gets cleared up, for ocing go with EPoX 8K7A, for non-ocing, ECS K7S5A by far is the best. And yeah, I'd go Maxtor or WD for the Hard Drive.

Thanks for the input. I'm still debating on the HD, I mean, you tend to only hear about the problems and not all the good things. I also am waiting to hear if Abit is going to replace ToBeMe's GF3 or not. I posted a message asking about what PS he had, but haven't seen a reply yet.

Thanks
