I am trying to look for the best one on newegg and by that I mean best gpu and best cpu. I will probably play a few games on there like COD4 and stuff like that I found this one but I would like other user opinions. I am buying from newegg because I have a few credits from them and figured why not use it for something like this. If you guys thing otherwise or oppose this notebook let me know of if you find a better one that they have. Thank you. I also might do some encoding on it and I have vista ultimate 64 already and I dont care about hdd size or memory because I can always buy those seperately the things I am concerned about is the non user replaceable stuff.
 
Sounds like it meets your needs nicely, especially with Newegg credits. It is not what I would call a working man's notebook - too big and clunky, but is a pretty good desktop replacement designed for running more off of A/C than battery.

My first act would be to replace the HDD with a 7200 RPM model - 200 GB.

the quadros are not meant for gaming. theyre better than an integrated video solution, but theyre not exactly gaming cards, but are meant for workstations. text

 
The 8700gt is about 25% faster than a 8600gt. With a faster CPU, it's significantly better than the other 2 Asus laptops. The sony, well... it looks like you are just paying for the Sony name and the blu-ray drive. If you want to game, I recommend looking for a laptop somewhere that comes with the 8800m, which blows the 8700m out of the water (at a huge cost of battery life though).
 
The 9300 and 9500 aren't gaming GPUs. The naming scheme works in the following manner:

1st digit is generation (9000 is really just a revision of 8000 and not a very big step at all)
2nd digit is performance (300 and 500 are mainstream, not gaming. For gaming, you'd have to look at 600 and higher)
So a 9600 may be comparable to the 8700 while 9800 (probably won't come out until late summer/early fall) will be an enthusiast part.

I've seen 8800m (there are 2: gts and gtx with a small performance difference between the 2) in Dell xps laptops for >$3000. Otherwise, you'd be looking at enthusiast brands like Alienware.
 
Why hasn't anyone suggested the Gateway P-172 FX for hundreds less than the Asus? It's got an 8800M GTS, which is much faster than any 8700M GT.

Best of all, you can get a configuration (P-172SFX)with 2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo, 3 GB RAM, 160GB HDD, and 8800M GTS for only $1400 (maybe less at some stores)...that's a whopping $750 less than the Asus for something that offers BETTER gaming performance.

If you want CPU speed to match the Asus (although CPU speed doesn't affect gaming performance much at all), there's the P-172XFX for $1950...it's got a 2.4 GHz Penryn CPU, 4 GB RAM, 320GB HDD, 8800M GTS and all the other goodies for aabout $200 less than the Asus.

Benchmark comparing the 8800M GTS and 8700M GT...the 8800M GTS is about TWICE as powerful as the 8700M GT in games:

Well, the $500 difference between the P-172XFX and the one at xoticpc.com is:
1. GTX vs. GTS
2. 2.4GHz Penryn has 3MB cache vs 2.5GHz has 6MB cache
Both = big price gap.
Also, one doesn't normally think of Gateway when high-end gaming is mentioned.
But at $2G, it wouldn't be a bad choice.
 
I'm kind of weary of the actual quality of the Gateway as well.

But the way I see it, if you are really looking into getting a laptop that can game and continue to play games for the following two years you might as well get the GTX.

Those GPUs are NOT better than the 8700M GT. The 9300M and 9500M GS are entry to midlevel GPUs that are not designed for high-res gaming. Even though they are newer, they do not perform better in gaming (they actually perform much worse than an 8800M in games). The high-end 9xxx GPUs have not been released yet, so the best you can do right now in terms of gaming performance is (in the following order) 8800M GTX, 8800M GTS, 8800M GT, and 8700M GT.

What's wrong with an 8800M GTS on a 1440x900 screen? The GTS can't deliver consistently playable FPS in DX10 games at resolutions higher than that with AA/AF on anyway. Even some hardware intensive older games like Oblivion barely get 30 FPS with high detail settings at 1440x900 on an 8800M GTS...and that's with 0x AA.

The mobile versions of the 8800GTS and GTX are NOT the same as their desktop counterparts. The 8800M GTS only has 64 stream processors, while the desktop variants had 96 (older versions) and 112 (new G92 versions).
 
Ok I am purchasing my new notebook this week I am torn between 17in and the 15in notebooks. The 17in because of more screen real estate and the 15in because of portability can you guys help befor I commit.
 
Edit: Didn't see the prev. posts. I'd agree with the others, get that Gateway they listed and use the newegg credits to upgrade the CPU, RAM, HDD, or whatever you feel like.

I have the laptop and love it. The 8800M GTS should be much better than the 8700. It has double the amount of stream processors.

And I think the 17" screen at 1440x900 looks great. It's a good combination with the 8800m gts. You should be able to play CoD4 on the highest settings even with the stock components (CPU, RAM, etc). I know I can play Bioshock on the highest settings at over 30fps constant.
