How's this for a noisy AMD system?

Just to rid people of the common misunderstanding that AMD systems run loud.... I am running my Athly 1800 system w/ 3 HD's and 2 video cards on just 2 panaflo fans.

lol. I had 4 EXTREMELY high power case fans in my old 1.33 T-Bird and Antec 1030B, and I saw a VERY small moth get sucked in while it was walking on the front intake slats. THWAAP, lol, it was pretty funny.

I've been trying to break that misconception too, but you might as well be saying VIA makes good chipsets around here as try to convince anyone you can run an Athlon with less than a half dozen Delta 80mms. Though I have more than 2 total fans, but nice panaflo over the cpu like you. Oh, and a VIA chipset of course, everything's happy and stable without being loud.

VIA chipset with a 80mm a 92mm and a 60mm over the hs...its not quiet, but stable, and i can do away with the 92 and put the 80 over the hs if i wanted 😀

I agree KKiller, choosing the right cooling components will make an AMD system a quiet one. I've got 3 panaflo's running in my system, 1 front intake, one exhaust and one in my PS. It's not deal silent, but quieter than my old PIII system 🙂

2 -80mm intake fans in the front
2 -80mm exhaust fans in the back,
1 -80mm side intake
2 -80mm PSU Exhaust Fans (Dual Fan PSU)
2 -60mm fans on videocard (one on HS, other on back of PCB)
1 -60mm CPU Fan (Volcano 5, Junk, and noisy)
1 -40mm northbridge fan

7 -80mm fans
3 -60mm fans
1 -40mm fans

11 -Total

All in an Antec SX-1040B Clone....

Funny thing is, I don't mind the noise...

Antec sx1030 case with a fan in front and the power supply fan running. 1 80 MM no the heatsink . the chipset has one has well. for the most part a lot quieter then the 4 cases fans I had running 😛

Yep, got a quiet system here too...
- 2x Panaflo intake
- 1x Panaflo exhaust
- 1x Panaflo on Alpha heatsink
- 2x fans in PSU
- 1x ATI fan on video card

That sounds like a lot of fans but as long as you're not in direct line of sight (line of sound?) with the wind tunnel, it is very quiet. Actually, the hard drive noise is about the same noise level as the rest of the system.

Beware of chipset fans, I had modded my K7S5A to put a Crystal Orb on the chipset, what a mistake... The system was much louder until I decided to get rid of that loud POS.

*edit* BTW, I'm using an Antec SX635, this case provides excellent airflow

I had a very quiet Athlon system. Of course it was just a 1GHz.

Now though, I have a P4 with only the retail CPU fan and the PSU. My Antec case has suddenly become overkill.

My amd system is now a lot quieter with my new Antec 330 watt truepower power supply. I plugged my 3 case fans in the fan only connectors which lets the power supply control the speed of the fans. My system is so much quieter now. It was pretty amazing. Cools pretty well too still. It is as quiet as someone elses p1 133 mhz system. I have a hard time believing its the same computer.

dexvx does your Dell Dimension 4500 Series even use case fans? I remember not using case fans and how quiet my computer was without case fans.

The Dell 4500 doesn't even have a fan on the CPU heatsink. It has a duct to an 80mm fan on the back. Even the P4 system I built isn't as quiet as my Dell.

kgraeme how can dell keep their computers stable with not a lot of cooling? I mean how does none of the hardware devices or processor not get too hot? I mean i am thinking it will shorten the life maybe.

I don't know, but it's slick. As for lifespan, I figure that my OC'd Celeron 300A is still going strong in a passive-cooling case so the lifespan is longer than most people need. Even if it's shortened a bit, it will still probably outlive the tech lifecycle.

I've an Athlon 1.0Ghz at 1.3GHz, with only three fans in the entire case; the CPU fan, the PSU fan, and a 92mm intake fan. All are Panaflos, and my CPU temp usually stays under 50, and I cant even tell its on.

As I discovered when I upgraded my TBird to a P4, it's not always how many fans you have that determine a system's loudness. My P4 system is almost silent compared to my TBird system and the only difference is the HSF on the CPU.

I put a 32 CFM Thermaltake 80mm fan on top of my Swiftech MCX462 and I'm loving it. Very quiet and reliable. No more Delta screamers.

Heres the Dell setup:

1 back exhaust fan that doubles as a CPU fan at 120mm, decent air flow. It is inaudible, quieter than the Panaflo.

1 forward intake fan, not sure of the size as I cannot see it. I think its either a 92mm or an 80mm, it too is inaudible.

1 power supply fan, probably 80mm, it is inaudible also.

For some reason people think that large OEMs use crap or tier2 components. However, those 3 fans are above the quality of the Panaflo, probably even beating Pabst fans. They are inaudible (except if you listen real hard on a silent night) and move a decent amount of air. The heatsink on the CPU (Northwood 1.8) looks to be of pretty high quality too, definitely above that of an Intel retail heatsink. It appears to be aluminum (not sure of the base plate material) with a lot of fins. The CPU definitely runs hotter than my 1.6a@2.4. I guesstimate it to be rougly 50-60C at load.

As for the lifespan, well they offer a 3 year on site warranty. So it sure better last for 3 years 🙂 Besides, it'd be bad for their reputation of their computer died after 5 or so years.

Haha, its not even 100 MHZ... I run at 1.13 @ 1.2... its pathetic.. I think my memory is bad for OCing (Generic stuff).

My CPU/Case Runs cool (45C/27C)

two 80 intakes
two 80 exhaust
one 80 in ps
one 92 in ps
one 60 on retail hsf (soon to be an 80 on a volcano 9)
one 40? one video card
three 40 in 5.25 drive bay between my dvd and cd burner

It's pretty loud, but I still run at 48 full load with this lousy retail hsf. I'm upgrading to the volcano 9 because my dorm room that I'll soon be moving into has no a/c.
