I am using a S/video cable and am getting a DVD-Rom. Hows the quality of movies on this thing using TV out? As good as a midrange set-top DVD player or worse(VHS)?
I don't know which chip the gainward uses it particular, but if it's a conexant 868/869 or the newer CX25870/1 chips, it can be quite good.
If you use good dvd software (windvd 2.3 is excellent), and a program called tvtool, you can achieve results very close to the average set top player.
I have a pioneer dv-343 under my tv, and use that for most things, but use my computer for non region 1 discs.
other than turning the brightness up a bit, things look good. A lot of people recommend power dvd, but I found it to pixellate a lot more than windvd (which on my machine, doesn't pixellate).
I will most likely be using WinDVD 3.0 which is what came with my card. I was just wondering how the quality was with TV out watching DVD's. Just ordered a Aopen 12x for $35 shipped.
Mine is icky compared to my $180 Toshiba set-top DVD player. Not even close. TVtool helps but the difference is still pretty big. The TV-out on my Radeon VIVO is far better than the Gainward's, the ATI is close but not quite as good as the set-top player. And the set-top player is much easier to use.
