How's the reliability on the PS3 Slim?

Serious question here for PS3 Slim owners. How reliable has it been for you guys? I've just resurrected my Fat 60gb from the dead for the third time. It's easy to fix, just a PITA.

Thinking about getting a Slim as my main console and using the other for PS2 games. Might pick up the move bundle.

If I understand correctly, yes. The PS3 Slim is considerably more reliable than the PS3 fat.

Look at it this way: The PS3 was released 4 years ago. It's already far enough into it's life cycle that Sony's manufacturing process has improved, and as a result PS3s are not only more reliable, but are also capable of fitting the hardware into a smaller chassis with no qualms. The PS3 Slim uses less energy, produces less heat, and is overall more efficient - in many cases it is actually slightly faster than the original PS3, in regards to load times, etc.

Hope that answers your question.

I think from somewhere i read before, that the slim only has a 1.5~% failure rate compared to the fat's 3.6%~

Its pretty reliable. You still have the yellow light of death, and disc read problems, but they are a lot better than the launch PS3s.

As long as you keep your PS3 with a lot of breathing room, you wont have YLOD issues, as far as BR-D reading, SONY has 1 yr warranty w/+2 optional for $50.00.

I ended up replacing the old unit. Got the move bundle too. My launch is about to become an expensive PS2. Oh well. It had a good run.

Completely untrue. My PS3 has always had more than enough breathing room, and it got YLOD.

Same here. I had mine originally on a shelf in a tv unit, which is open at the back and away from other head generating components. Suffered it's first and second on there. Then I moved it out in the open. Kept the room cool, but it suffered a third. I think two much heat builds up inside the case, particularly on top under the PSU, which gets surprisingly hot since theres no airflow up there.

Its the solder joints that weaken. I want my f----ing electronics pumped full of lead again because tin solder is crap.

I haven't had my ps3 fat fail yet, but do you guys have schematics of which solder joints fail?

The repair isn't too difficult if you have prior knowledge of desktop or laptop repair. Google the Gilksy method.

Sorry for the plug but I go over it in detail here.

You need to use the heat gun to heat the Cell, RSX, and two RAM modules. There are blocks of two chips above the processors. Heat gun has to be between 350C and 450C. Heat each section for 15 seconds, let cool 15 minutes, flip board over and do the same on the backs of the components.

The disc read errors can usually be fixed by going into the repair mode and running the hard drive repair utilities there. It's been a while since I've done it, so I don't remember the exact steps.. there are plenty of videos on youtube that explain it.

My buddy had a PS3 that would only read certain movies and nothing else, so we ran the hard drive repair thing that we saw in a youtube video. It fixed the problem completely.

I've had the Slim since the day it came out, doing well so far. Been using it for both games and dvds/blue-rays so it gets lots of usage, roughly 2-3 hours every night.

That's exactly what I've been doing since the Slim came out. I bought it immediately so I would have less wear on my launch system. Since I got the Slim I have only used my launch system to play PS2 games to get the slight improvement in graphics. Neither system has caused me any problems thus far, and I've used both a lot. Good luck with your decision :).

Is the BD-ROM drive faster in the slim?
