1024x768 High settings, I think it runs pretty laggy, what am I missing here?

Check your AA / AF settings? Make sure they arn't being forced via the drivers? Make sure vsync is off?

It´s all off.
Maybe I should´nt have said "pretty laggy", but its a bit laggy when your outside and fighting. I dont have any performance issues in other games, maybe people are exaggerating how smooth it runs?

1024x768 2xAA 8xAF on Radeon 9800Pro 256MB. I dont have an Frame rate programs, but I can say it is smooth except during "movies" where it stutters slightly. and during occasional random times during game play.

While old, I wouldn't consider the 9800P to be a POS. Maybe a bottleneck, but definately not a POS.
The 9800p/xt are now considered MAINSTREAM cards. ;)

You can pay more for a similar performing x700/GT6600. :p

i a waiting awhile for HL/2 (finishing a current game and waiting for the 'bugs' to work out and a "sale").

the 9800p ran DOOM III pretty well (for a crap game except for gft) . . . . HL2 will run a LOT better on ATI cards. ;)

Game runs quite well when it isn't stuttering, which isn't too often anymore. I did notice some framerate reduction in one of the earlier rooms, but everything is smooth since then.

at first i ran high textures, med models, 1024 res 4xaa 4xaf and got 80+ fps with very few slowdowns. now im running 1280, high textures, med models(dont care about that to much) 2xaf, 2xaa with water to reflect everything(looks great) and i get 45-85 fps constant, VERY playable and im picky about stuff benig "glass smooth" or i dont like it, its very smooth, few slowdowns on huge events but only for a second or two, totally worth it imo.

few pics i took last night.

get catalyst 4.12beta...

also, don`t confuse the stuttering with lagginess. there seem to be some bugs causing stuttering on HL2 that happens on a wide variety of systems, ATi and Nvidia.

and just to be sure there arent any configuration "oopsies" on your system, you should post your scores of 3dmark 03 and 3dmark 01 (default settings). maybe the agp GART driver isnt properly installed, etc.

actually since the beta catalyst 4.11 (the ones that ATI distributed as a KOTOR hotfix) Doom3 performance has been excellent with the 9800 Pro and clearly beats the pants off Nvidia`s piss-poor GF 5xxx series.

I went from 46fps in Catalyst 4.8 to 57.5 fps in Catalyst 4.12beta... in Doom3! clearly, it was the `Catalyst AI` at work. but after playing for about an hour, i could not detect any visual deficiencies... so hats off to ATI for implementing the AI feature.

and yes, HL2 is playing VERY well on my 98pro. i replaced my broken ATI Silencer 1 with a good ol`VGA silencer rev.3 and im running at 440/375 with absolute stability...

I've heard this same line for the last 7 years.

I notice my fps dive to 30-40 arouind water. I set the reflections to simple too. Indoors its 60-70 (vsync on). I run at 1280x1024 winj no AA/AF, I might try 2xAA/2xAF though.
