Thinking about buying a laptop with one. Not seeing whole lot of information online - how does it compare to Intels Core 2 Duo? Also, it's a 64 bit CPU if I understand correctly, right? If so - does it require a 64 bit OS to fully utilize it?

Yes.

"Fully utilize" is a loaded phrase. It will run a 32-bit OS just fine. The practical performance difference compared to a 64-bit OS may be something or may be nothing; if you're running Windows, there's not much to recommend 64-bit WinXP.

Let me clarify - I'm a software developer and I'd like to play around with 64 bit JVM. Would I be able to run that on regular XP or would I need XP 64?

You would need to buy 64-bit Win XP, which won't work, because I can guarantee you that no laptop manufacturer has 64-bit drivers to download.

ok, to tell you the truth 64bit windows for me was just some crap Microsoft threw out and had limited support now it has a lot but still. Stay with 32bit os it will run fine. there is no point in buying 64bit.

I agree with that from the perspective that XP64 was an orphan placeholder right from the start. There was no way OEMs were going to put a lot of effort into driver support for it. 64-bit will be important when it goes mainstream somewhere in the Vista lifecycle, I would guess.
