Guys, this isn't about moving up job titles in the same company; how'd you land your (initial) position in that company

I was an intern in college, hired full time after I graduated. As for the original term, hired as a referral from fellow student who had also done his Co-op with them.

I work for a newspaper, you should all be using newspapers, only the best jobs come from newspapers.

My research advisor was hired. She referred me for an internship a few months later. Based off the work I did I was offered a full-time gig.

A guy at the monthly LAN party I attend knew a recruiter who was looking for someone to fill a spot, and he knew my current employment was nearing the end. Is that a referral or headhunter vote?
