How'd they decide who went on what coin?

They had a talent competition of all the presidents on fox and then the american people voted in with text messages on their cell phones. I still think john adams got jipped.

No way, Polk totally pwned John Adams, I think he shoulda made the two dollar bill.
 
I'm not sure about coins, but the BEP (Bureau of Engraving and Printing) has a nice little article about the faces on bills and notes that
Treasury Department records do not reveal the reason that portraits of these particular statesmen were chosen in preference to those of other persons of equal importance and prominence.
I would imagine it'd probably be pretty similar for the coinage.
