More complicated equipment, I guess. Black boxes use magnetic tapes and such. Streaming would require a crapload of fragile electronics, or so i'd assume.

But that's the point; it wouldn't matter at that point if the thing is destroyed cause the data is elsewhere! they should still have black box for redundancy.

That would certainly negate the need of searching for the stupid thing after a crash. However, an argument could be made that streaming would add more points of potential failure. If something on the satellite were to malfunction, the connection between plane and ground control would be severed.

Good point, forgot about that.

Knightbreed : It's one way, plane to satellite to ground. I'd assume it would stream info to the satellite to save, instead of saving the last 30 minutes onto magnetic media. Other stuff would just work as normal. It would just revert back to magnetic or something.

It could cost a crapload of money to put on new planes and to retrofit many of the planes :-\

Well yeah i mean just have a blackbox + a sattilite streaming thing....i mean if they can have phones and stuff on a plane i think they can manage to do something....and money shouldnt really be an issue.

Let me tell you form a FAA standpoint, first off people do not want to spend any more money on general taxes to fund the Federal Goverment, and do not want more airport taxes to pay for more equipment for the FAA, and also congress is always trying to figure out the cheapest way to do business, even though this is the flying public. But do they care, no they don't fly on regular airlines. The best thing you can do on this and many issues is to write and call your congressman and senator and tell them to fund more projects in the FAA, or whatever you are intersted in for goverment projects. People just don't understand how much pull these letters help. Money is the big problem why new projects are not on line. They cut the numbers of Air Traffic Controlers and Electronics Technicians, and expect us to do the same amount of work with less staffing. Well enough about my rant, you may tell I am not too fond of the way congress does business.

meaning they would still have to have the black box:p i'm sure stream would cost way more.
