Ive been here for a while and weve always asked everyone for pics of whatever their talking about rite?...well we should have a integrated way to upload pics but have them just linked in teh thread....that way we dont have to goto a diffrent pics service...i mean we're just dieing for integration here....anyone agree with me?

Bandwidth issues, I'd assume, also.

ALTHOUGH...

That would be a very nice perk for us subscribers ;)

Most likely wouldn't work well enough if it was just subscribers imo, although I'm a subscriber myself :)

Without those people who don't pay, the size of Anandtech would be far smaller then it currently is, and although they may not pay with tangible assets, there minds are often far more valuable then their wallet :)

Qosis, people would still be part of the community if they didn't subscribe. They just wouldn't be able to upload pictures.

But hey, if somebody wants to throw a server up somewhere to handle the pics, we could just come up with a standard way of linking to that.

ATOT does have a pic-hosting service provided by one of the members here, I don't have the link on hand, however. My point was just that it would be nice for it to be integrated right into the forums.

I see a lot of boards where members can substitute a custom pic for their avatar.
I'm guessing with the huge user base here at Anand's that might be a problem. HOwever, if they limited that feature to subscribers.... :D

It brings up the possibility of people putting un-fit material as their avatar.

Very true, indeed. Hmm.. maybe custom avatars for Diamond members and above with clean records? :p

can you say bandwidth sucking ? lol, it would be nice but I doubt it would ever happen.
I do wish Zuni would come up with some new avatars for subscribers though !

Well perhaps if you and the other 89,000 members who haven't subscribed, subscribe, they could afford to do something like this ;) :p

Can someone explain how it's a bandwidth hog? I dunno how this stuff works. If I have the image hosted on another site, how does it increase the bandwidth? Does the picture actually go through AT to get to me? I thought AT would send me the link data, just a few characters, and the image would be grabbed from another server. It seems like it wouldn't take any more bandwidth than a line of text. Is that not how it works?

If it is just a link to an image on another website, then no, it does not use this site's bandwidth. But it will increase the load-time of the page. However, that method will disable any type of moderating of the pictures for content.

I think image support (hosted OUTSIDE of AT) would be a GREAT thing for subscribers. you know a subscriber isn't going to be a troll, so no inappropriate pics will be posted.

Also signature pictures would be great! (with a limit of course...say no more than 75 pixels high and no bigger than 10KB or something? Once again, subscriber only.

Ugh, you people don't get it lol...

first off, there's no way AT will ever officially be affiliated w/any thing to do with my hosting operations or anybody elses.

The reasons:
1. Legal issues: of course we have responsible people, but the inmature ones ruin it for everyone.
2. Bandwidth: sure, we'd be hosting and providing the majority of bandwidth, but it still creates a jam to have pics.anandtech.com hosted and being accessed by many users.
3. Moderation: I can't monitor the service 24/7 as I'm sure the others can't. The mods shouldn't have to partake in any of this. It takes a lot of effort to make sure every file uploaded is appropriate. The only way is to approve pictures before allowing them to be hosted (verification via checking out the pics and then accepting them into the general database). It's too much work.

And personally, I feel subscribers shouldn't get any special favors. The whole point of the hosting services is to provide it for everyone here who is willing to use it responsibly.

That's what I'm thinking.

what paulson said, unless ATOT's bandwidth and maturity levels rise, we probably wont see integrated pic viewing, even if they were hosted by other sites. besides, it would be a strain on AT's dialup members as well.

what would be nice is if somewhere on the forums (or faqs) it had the hosting services listed... there's more than one host and plenty more coming I imagine, so it'd be nice if they were all in a listing, with a good description of the type of service offered, so each user could choose which hosting service would best fit their needs...

Least that's my theory...

That is never going to happen on a forum this large full of this many kiddies. I doubt one subscriber would ever cause any trouble though, if they got banned they just lost 30 bucks or whatever they paid.

lol...

I don't know how many people would submit to that type of model but I wouldn't, and guess who are the few of us letting you use our bandwidth? ;)

It's all or none. Otherwise it's not fair. (life isn't fair, but every bit of fairness in an unfair world helps out.)
