NEW YORK (Reuters) - Shock jock Howard Stern's show was yanked Wednesday from Clear Channel Communications Inc. radio stations after an incident on his show Tuesday, the first casualty of its zero tolerance policy on indecency.

"It was vulgar, offensive and insulting, not just to women and African Americans but to anyone with a sense of common decency," Clear Channel Radio Chief Executive John Hogan said in a statement.

"We will not air Howard Stern on Clear Channel stations until we are assured that his show will conform to acceptable standards of responsible broadcasting," he said.

Clear Channel has about 1,200 stations in the United States though it was not immediately clear how many aired his show.

Stern's show is syndicated by a unit of Viacom Inc.

Clear Channel are a bunch of pussies.

They were getting pressure from the NeoCons. It was either yank him or get their License yanked.

Nothing out of the ordinary from what he does everyday and every show. I didn't hear it, I'm going by what local Talk Radio show host said here as it was breaking News.

I'm sure there will be more details.

Are there any "Free" 1st Ammendent Friendly, not controlled by Clear Channel Stations left in America for Howard to get on the Air???

Well now I have no reason to wake up early in the morning anymore or even a reason to listen to the radio. Frankly Howard Stern's show is the only radio show I ever listened too that didn't put me to sleep. Hopefully Howard will take his show to satellite radio, then I'll have a reason to get a satelite radio package for my car.

clear chanel just got a big fine for some morning guy down in florida "exposing himself" on the radio, so it seems only natural that they would drop Stern.

""For years, Lieberman (D-Conn.) has been Washington's most indefatigable proponent of slapping labels on nearly anything he finds personally offensive -- not to mention pressing for V-chips and denouncing the "destructive influence of the entertainment media."

In highly publicized campaigns, the Connecticut politician has linked arms with Book of Virtues author William Bennett to attack Hollywood: The duo tallied how many out-of-wedlock sexual references appeared on network broadcasts during "family hours" and successfully prodded computer-game makers to rate their software. They even pressured Time Warner into selling its Interscope rap label, which sold albums by Tupac Shakur and Dr. Dre.

Lieberman co-sponsored the Media Violence Labeling Act introduced in May. It would move the videogame and movie industries toward a single national rating system to be approved by the Federal Trade Commission. He said in June that websites would not be covered, but that his legislation "sets the stage" for such an effort in the future.

Tipper Gore, Vice President Al Gore's wife, began a similar campaign in the 1980s against "porn rock" -- which led to Senate hearings over music content and accusations of censorship from some publishers.

The prospect of the White House being occupied by a Gore-Lieberman pro-ratings combination seems to unsettle some free-speech groups.

"In principle (Lieberman's) in favor of free speech," says Marvin Rich, program director for the National Coalition Against Censorship. "On the other hand, he wants the government to intervene in areas that are probably not subject to government intervention under our First Amendment."

"In a number of areas, he and Tipper are side by side, arm in arm," Rich says.

In June, Lieberman told a Congressional advisory panel that the U.S. government should consider creating a new top-level domain such as ".sex" or ".xxx." (Government auditors have said that only the Commerce Department can add new top-level domains.)

"This idea, which would in effect establish a virtual red-light district ... has a lot of merit," Lieberman said. "For rather than constricting the Net's open architecture, it would capitalize on it to effectively shield children from pornography."

Critics have said the idea won't work because different countries have different standards: Conservative Muslim countries could be exceptionally censorial, while the Netherlands is generally more laissez-faire. Even inside the United States, some artists have been convicted under obscenity laws for lewd cartoons. "

Nothing like two ultra conservatives like Joe Liberman and Tipper Gore....damn them and their ultra conservative views :)

This is just the same knee-jerk reaction that we see when some idiot shoots up a school. See people would rather blame scape-goats like Howard Stern for something that two idiots did on tv. Rather then just move on with life and focus on real issues the goverment and those who like to act high and mighty would rather just waste our time and money on stupid issues like gay marriage and getting radio networks to ban certian radio shows. You'd think the war on terror and what is going on in Iraq would be more important then the gay marriage issue and a freaking boob on tv and what some guy says on a radio show.

not sure why you don't understand this on your own bozack, but Joe and Tipper had nothing to do with the topic at hand. Michael Powell is the man behind what is happening here.

To be accurate the true fear is the Congressional hearings that have been taking place since the Superbowl broadcast. Michael Powell and the FCC are just reacting to what Congress is doing. Clear Channel has their moment in the spotlight coming up and the thinking in the radio community seems to be that they are taking all these steps so they have something to highlight at the hearings. Bozack is correct to point out that this is a truly bipartisan issue with members in both parties climbing up on their collective soapboxes regarding indecency. I believe it was Lieberman that bluntly told broadcasters a few years back to clean up their act or the government would do it for them. Powell, Lieberman, Tipper Gore, Heather Wilson and a host of others all have a hand in what is taking place today. It did not start with the Superbowl broadcast, that was just a catalyst for the current actions.

Snowman, someone both here and on the ot forum ignorantly stated that censorship is always the fault of the republican/conservatives.....

I was merely trying to show that the dems are just as bad, if not worse when it comes to issues of media censorship.

bozack, was the word 'Republican' written anywhere in my post?

Before you respond so impetuously perhaps you should analyze things a bit closer...

This will cost Clear Channel big money in lost listenership and advertising. Props to them for setting a content standard and sticking to it. Pfffffftttttt to them for being humorless 'droids

Well their 'content standard' is a bit inconsistent, as when I was browsing stations on my way to work this morning I found stern was still on in my area, and they were talking about the whole incident so it's definitely 'live'. Apparently they were only yanked from a few select markets in the country.

I don't usually listen to the show because I simply don't have a long enough drive to work, otherwise I'd probably listen to it more often

My God get your facts straight. Stern has been indefinately suspended by Clear Channel stations in 6 cities:

The Stern show airs on Clear Channel stations in six cities: San Diego; Pittsburgh; Orlando; Fort Lauderdale; Louisville, Kentucky; and Rochester, New York.

Everywhere else he's on the air.

I'm curious as to what exactly was offensive?

In a statement, Clear Channel Radio chief John Hogan said the incident in question was offensive "not just to women and African Americas but to anyone with a sense of common decency."

Tuesday's show featured an interview with Paris Hilton sex-tape costar Rick Salomon, a discussion of Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ and a trivia game as played by two naked sisters who made out with each other, according to the Stern fan site MarksFriggin.com.

One network pulled the show from 6 of their network affiliate stations.

They also got 'Bubba the Love Sponge' again.

Funny ? Depends on your point of view.
Obscene ? Again - point of view.
Indecent ? Let's ask Jerry Falwell for his definition.
