how would you split a hotel room between 5 people?

starting to plan my summer/fall vacation, and I've gotten to thinking that if we get 1 room instead of 2, we could probably stay in a much nicer hotel wherever we end up going (current top contenders are Orlando (for Disney/Universal), San Francisco, or Seattle)

but it has me wondering, how would you split payment between 5 people if one of them end up on a sofa bed/couch or air mattress in the hotel room? seems like they should get a discount for the inconvenience... alternatively, the one couple could take the one bed and the singles could rotate, but then I still feel like the singles should get some percentage of a break.

(otherwise, it'll be the couple in one room and the three singles in another, but going college ghetto style would open up the possibility of getting a nice suite or something if the couple doesn't mind going a week without sex... obviously gotta check with everyone involved first, just thinking ahead)

2 on each bed (if there is 2), 2 on pull out. if there isnt a pull out, one is on the floor, one is on the couch

You split it by having everyone nut up and just paying the same for everyone regardless of sleeping conditions.

I've gone on lots of trips as friends and we all always pay the same even if someone sleeps on the couch or something. It's not that big of a damn deal.

You take the total and divide by 5?

Nobody would ever be so menial as to whine that they have to pay the same for sleeping on a sofabed.

This really isn't a big prob...

Just divide by 5 and let someone man up and take the cot/couch. You can even rotate him to take the bed next day.

I can't imagine someone's feathers getting ruffled over this, especially among men.

or that. :p it's me just thinking about fairness.

I'm potentially the couple, and I'd have no problem paying for our own room (especially if we go to Disney where I can get 1 room for 50% off), but I was thinking that with 5 of us, we could upgrade to a suite with a view or something and make the costs better for my friends as well.

Don't know about your traveling companions but I'll be damned if I'm going to sleep on the floor or a sofa while paying the same amount of money that those who got beds did. You're talking about a vacation here? several days? What kind of friend expects another friend to just suck this up? I don't care how nice a room is, if you're stuck on the sofa or the floor for a few days the trip will seriously suck.

Oh, I wouldn't "whine" I would book & pay for my own room, sorry but I'm not sleeping on a sofa or the floor on a vacation.

Just expand on the bellhop method.

Three guests check into a hotel room. The clerk says the bill is $30, so each {guest} pays $10. Later the clerk realizes the bill should only be $25. To rectify this, he gives the bellhop $5 to return to the guests. On the way to the room, the bellhop realizes that he cannot divide the money equally. As the guests didn't know the total of the revised bill, the bellhop decides to just give each guest $1 and keep $2 for himself. Each guest got $1 back: so now each guest only paid $9; bringing the total paid to $27. The bellhop has $2. And $27 + $2 = $29 so, if the guests originally handed over $30, what happened to the remaining $1?

How are you deciding who sleeps on the couch? If you are going to draw straws or something then everyone should be fine paying 1/5 each. If on the other hand you already know who is going to not get a bed then I suggest you make alternative arrangements because that is a douchebag move.

presumably, I'd say "we can upgrade to X if we fit 5 in a room, but one person would have to sleep on the couch... that person would get to take a little off the cost, though, for the inconvenience. any volunteers? otherwise, we'll get 2 rooms and it'll be about Y split between the three of you"

I feel like I'm on the cusp at 30... the big driving force would be saving money for my friends and upgrading the view/location.

the money's not a huge factor for me, but I'm not exactly going to book a $400/night room for myself and expect my underemployed friends to stay in the same hotel.

People go on vacation to relax and enjoy themselves. Sleeping on a floor/couch/pull out bed is the opposite of relaxing and enjoying yourself. Sleep is more important than anything else and having bad night sleep due to shitty sleeping conditions will ruin the rest of the vacation for at least that person.

If you go to Orlando there are townhomes/condos that rent for less than $1000 a week with 2 or more bedrooms.

There are so many foreclosures there many are having to compete with those underwater; rates are rock bottom now.

This is easily solved: You don't split the room between 5 people, unless you want to be miserable the entire trip.

The most I could see fitting on one hotel room without turning it into a pseudo-barracks would be 4. If 5+, someone is sleeping on the floor if you don't get a additional roll-in bed. I guess you could bring an air mattress with you to avoid paying the hotel for one, though.

I'd get a room with two double/king size beds and make sure the hotel has a cot/fold out bed etc for the 5th to sleep on.

If the cot is decent, heck I'd sleep on it the entire time. I don't care. I don't go on vacations to see the inside of the hotel room. If the cot etc sucks just rotate, it's no biggie.

But given 5 people I would make sure we have a balcony so i wouldn't get claustrophobic.

Enjoy your trip.
