would this situation be illegal:

*you have a concealed pistol.
a mugger comes up to you, flashes his gun at you, and asks for your wallet.
you give him your wallet, he starts running away.
as he runs away, you whip out your gun and shoot him in the back/leg and grab your stuff

id guess since the threat was gone, probably illegal in most states.

a marine i knew claimed a friend of his lived in DC, was a stoplight late at night going home and someone came up to his car and stuck a gun in the window. he handed the guy the keys and, for some reason, he freaked, shot the driver anyway, and left. he then tells me his friend, not yet dead, pulled *his* pistol out of his glovebox and chased the guy, hitting him in the back a couple of times before they both dropped, dead.

still not sure if that i believe it.

I don't know but in a class I took had a case in which a woman was brutally rapped by two guys (I think) and badly cut with a knife. She bandaged herself up got a gun want out and found the men and killed them. They tried to charge her for murder but the citizens flipped and they let her go.

Well, assuming I did not immediately evacuate every orifice on my person, I suppose I'd have to rely on my training. I have, you understand, seen every Chuck Norris movie ever filmed. We are tight, Chuckles and I. That's how tight we are....I call him Chuckles and live. Would-be attackers, FEAR ME, for I have the power of Chuckles Norris!

They say the thing to do is the run off in a zig zag pattern yelling at the top of your lungs for help, etc.

My personal experience

A kid pulled a short nosed revolver on me in the late 80?s. I managed to talk him down and left the area. It was a bright South Florida day and the bullet in the chamber had a blue tip. And I did have to drive home and change my underwear. The cops didn?t care. I refused to go back to that North Miami area ever since the incident. Does that answer your question?

Buy into their demands, then as they walk away pull my own weapon, maybe even shoot em in the leg if I feel the need to "subdue" them, and then hold em there till the cops show up and lock those ****** up. Honestly, the law can kiss my ass in a situation like this. If some punkass is going to take my stuff, I'm going to make him pay. Its mine, he loses all his rights the second he tries to mug me.

Honestly, probably duck and try to run in a wild and zig zag pattern. Chances are the mugger does not have very good aim. Regardless of what you see on TV, if you shoot a pistol and aren't trained it is very hard to hit a stationary target the size of a human 15 feet away. I'd just pray that the guy is a crazy crack addict with the shakes.

Probably book it into the first brush I could find. Pistol rounds don't do a whole lot of damage on impact, that's why cops have those special rounds.

I don't think there is any hard and fast rule to such an encounter... I wouldn't want to find out how weak my martial arts foo is in a situation like that unless I had absolutely no other option, and I was sure the situation was going to turn violent.

My advice to winning a violent encounter is avoiding the fight to begin with. Paying attention to your surroundings, and getting a 'vibe' for whats going on around you, ahead of you, and behind you gives you an edge... Being aware as well as self confident generally makes you a less desirable target for someone intent on making you a victim. Having said that, its not always possible to avoid such an encounter...

If you are in such an encounter, I would try to keep your cool as much as possible and assess the situation as best as you can. If there is any chance that complying up to a certain point is going to de-escalte the situation, than by all means comply if it means giving up your wallet, car keys or whatever. If the encounter turns into something where someone is trying to get you into a car, or move to a more isolated area, all bets are off... I don't think there is anything you own that is worth the price of being shot, and can probably be replaced at some point in time, but if someone has alterior motives and is trying to get you into a position to further escalate the attack, I think the odds are higher that the probability of violence being used has gone up dramaticly. If pride or machismo is going to make you step-up and try taking on someone with a gun, you are one step closer to being a darwin award nominee in my mind...

If the situation goes t*ts up, and it looks like violence is going to occur, my first choice would be to create distance between you and the attacker, as well as bringing in the use of cover... putting anything between you and the attacker whether it means a telephone pole, tree, newspaper rack or whatever increases the chance of getting out of the situation. I would also try and make as much of a commotion as possible to draw attention to your situation as possible, and get the hell out of there...

If you have no other choice other than to go to blows, realize you are fighting for your life and act accordingly. I always carry a pocket knife, and that would be my first choice (unless I had a CCW and a firearm, obviously) using one hand to block the weapon or knock it off axis, while attacking with the knife to the most vulnerable, lethal target open to attack depending on position of the attacker. If a knife is not available, time to improvise! A pen, keys, a piece of wood or rock laying on the ground, anything to increase your hit points...:D

Stand right where you are, look them in the eye and take it like a man. If they shoot and you don't die... you're a badass MF'er the rest of your life. If they don't shoot... you're a bdadass MF'er the rest of your life. If they do shoot and you die, you'll never know and for the rest of that dudes life, he'll think... "that was a badass MF'er."

That sucks bro, glad you were'nt hurt. I almost feel that in a situation like that where some street punk is threatening your life, if the victim gets the upperhand and kills the antagonist there should'nt be any legal action taken. Hell if people were allowed to carry weapons in public there would be a lot less crime. Seems to me most of these so called thugs are just cowards, they try to prey on whoever they think is weak. But imagine the shock on some asshat's face when they pull out a knife and the intended victim pulls out a .45

It is unfortunate that in most states, you would be charged with murder.

Are you smoking crack? 15 feet away? Stationary target? The first time I shot a pistol at 21 feet I could hit within 12" almost every time.... if they have 15 bullets, and you are 15 feet away, they could be a blind man and hit you... 15 shots... to hit a 5-6' tall 2 foot wide target? lmao...
