how would you partition a 40gb drive?

I play a lot of computer games, download a lot of music, and do some other stuff. So how should I go about partitioning my new 40 gb drive? Should I partition it at all? Or just have it be one big 40 gb drive. Anything I need to know about partitioning it? I dont have the drive yet, but will be getting it soon.

thanks

Hi,

I would suggest that you make 2 partitions:
10gigabytes for the os and
30gigabytes for music.

I hope this helps!:)

i agree. Plus if windows takes a crap on ya, it's easier to format the 10 gig partition than the whole disk.

I would strongly reccomend a 2 partition setup for a drive that is going to have an OS on it along with data. In the case of a 40GB drive I would go with either a 10GB or 15GB OS/Programs drive and use the rest for storage. Like the others have said, you can format the OS drive and not lose any of your data.

That's exactly how mine's set up (WinXP Pro OS and programs on 10GB partition; data, music, avi's, etc. on 30GB partition). Works great for me, although if you load on the games and programs, you might want to make that a 15GB OS/Program partition, and a 25GB data partition. Or, for that matter, split it half and half if you're really into big games. No sense making a separate partition for programs, as they embed their tentacles deep inside the Windows registry (which is on your OS partition), so if you reformat your OS partition, you'll need to wipe the programs partition as well. Might as well have them both on one partition then - it would be more convenient. HTH. :)

10GB seems a little small for an OS drive. I would either go 15/25, or 20/20. If you go with 10, you'll find yourself having to frequently make room for new programs.

5 gig windows, 5 gigs debian, 5 gigs linux-flavor-of-the-moment, 5 gigs bsd-of-the-moment, 5 gigs open beos, 5 gigs atheos, 5 gigs qnx, and 5 gigs solaris x86 :D

Actually, I find that 5 gigs is more then enough for a windows OS only partition. Do the rest for you music and stuff

In the seemingly-endless number of these type of threads, you will get an equally seemingly-endless number of suggestions. But FWIW, I think that the only thing partitioning is good for anymore is to make a small OS partition (for faster defrags/etc) and leave the rest as one big one.

I have a 40GB drive and I made two partitions:

8GB for OS and "important" apps like Office, Photoshop, etc.
32GB for everything else.

I just did this with my new Seagate barracuda....

Definitely go 10/30. I think 10 is more than enough for OS, and 30 gigs is more than enough to screw around with. From my experience, that 10 gig partition never fills up, even with autocad drawings all over the place.

However, after doing this, I wish I had split the 10 into two fives so that I could run BSD/Darwin (doh!), guess Im screwed for the moment having to run win2k <blech> or XP <gulp>.

If you don't want to go with one big 40 gb partition i would make it likes this: 5 gb OS & programms plus personal stuff | 10 gb for music | 5 gb for games | 20 gb for movies

ok, I think I may go with 10/30. When I install a game, I install it to the OS partition, right?

Yes, any program you install goes in the OS partition, unless you want it in your data partition, but I wouldn't see why... :)

Sounds good. Yes put anything that needs to be installed into the OS partition. Otherwise just use one. Anymore than 2 is usually pointless.

I'd go 10/30 and install games on the OS partition. But if u need to u can install some on the other partition. Certain games (Counterstrike pops up to the top of my head) don't need to be reinstalled and u can just run them even if u format the OS partition.

Yes, I agree.

10GB for O/S, programs and such.

30GB for Music, Movies, etc etc.

Better when reformating since you dont lose all your music and stuff.

It's really the way to go if you only have one hard drive. It really helps same your files if you system ever craps out(although I'm sure we all try to avoid that as much as possible but it doesn't hurt to be prepared)
