If you use FF, get the Foxytunes plugin. It'll find info/Lyrics/more on any(98% of the time) song you play. Get the Genre from there.

For rock-type music, I have Rock, Metal and Classic Rock, though Allannis Morissette would probably go in Pop (if not Recycle Bin 😉). How is the category's size a problem? If it makes it harder to find music for PC listening use a good player like foobar and customize it to increase the size of the list. If it's an issue with putting music on a portable, how about a higher-capacity portable? Don't turn into one of these people who argues for hours on end about whether a band is psychadelic rock, orchestral rock, progressive rock, oppressive rock, blah blah blah, it gets tiring.
