Limited account, no access to admin account because they may still even abuse that. Windows Defender + Kaspersky running in the background, IE7B3 or Firefox browser, automatic updates and virus updating/scanning.

I did this on my mothers PC minus the giving her the admin password part. If I did that she would end up giving it to one of my brothers who are the ones that really manage to screw up her computer.

here's a spin.
you don't noob proof the pc, you de-noob the person - meaning, teach them about the thngs that can harm their pc.

This will sound sexist, but based on my personal experience, women tend to break a PC very quickly.

Anyone got any similar experiences with this?

Examples of why women can be bad for computers?

One favourite observation of mine, is how, if anything takes more than about 2 seconds from when they clicked it, they'll click it again. And again and again and again. Then they'll think, fine, that's obviously broken, let's try something else, and click that. And again.

Then they ask you to fix it. You try to do anything, and it doesn't respond.
You ask, "What were you trying to do?"
They say, "I tried to open that, but it wouldn't open."
You ask, knwoing the response, "Did you try it again?"
They say, "Yeah, I tried to open it again, but nothing was happening"
During this conversation, the poor b@stard laptop catches up, 19windows explode open, and Windows grinds to a halt.

Good times.

Both ideas are impossible. It's like trying to make cars safe vs. making people drive safer.

Charge insane prices to fix problems. Hitting the wallet is the usally the best and fastest way to teach a person anything.

For a complete and utter noob there is nothing you can do, they will screw it up. There are the few well-known steps to delay the inevitable though.

1) Anti-virus program that runs at least daily
2) Spyware program that runs at least daily
3) Firefox and Thunderbird
4) Install their video and audio codecs FOR THEM so they won't bitch and moan when they can't play certain movies and music
5) Download a hosts file that contains a long list of ad sites unless you're certain that the user has the ability to use the Adblock firefox extension (FTW)
6) Create an image of their system once you've perfected it, keep the image on a DVD

More extreme step that probably isn't necessary
7) Consider Raid 1 or Raid 5 in case a drive dies, then you won't have to hear them bitch about lost data. Alternative option is to create regular image backups of drive changes

I don't recommend zonealarm for a noob, that will just confuse them unless you teach them how to use it. A good hardware firewall is what you really want. In actuality, the only way to noob proof a computer is to remove the presence of noobs through education... or murder.

One thing that MIGHT work:
Live CD linux distribution. Disconnect the DVD-ROM's eject mechanism.

Use the local policy on the computer to lock it down good. I did this with a computer for my grandparents and it works great. They can't really do anything except save to a flash drive, surf the internet, and use basic programs.

Install a LiveCD of Ubuntu. No access to the hard disk (by default), and Linux is virtually virus-proof as it is.

Remove all links to IE

You can't stop people from WILLFULLY installing spyware... you can tell them to call you every time they download something, but they'll get tired of that. Only other options are to set them up with Linux (which they'll stare blankly at) or a Mac (which will cost a bit more than a PC).

true, but doing a little of both might make it safer than just doing one thing.

The best why to noob proof a computer is by teaching them how to use it.

but first I would make it out of somthing small, and fast, and spend 20 min to teach them how to use it.
