In a conversation with a superior where you work, he "off the cuff", nonchalantly offers you a substantially promoted position. You mention you're flattered that he appreciates the quality of work you've been doing, to which he says "oh, I don't really care about that. You're just a really nice guy and easy to work with, everyone likes you."

So, wtf does that mean? He doesn't care about the quality of work I do? He doesn't think I actually do great work but everyone seems to think I'm a swell person, so oh well? It kinda sounded like a comment to a female getting a promotion: "well, the quality of your output is so-so, but you got big jugs."

Am I looking way too much into this? I'm really happy to receive the offer, which I doubt he would offer if he didn't like the work I do. Recently, the dept gave me an award for outstanding performance. So I think I'm doing well. It just seemed such an odd remark to make in that conversation...

Well, at least he didn't say your work isn't good, he just doesn't care that it is.

just be happy you got the promotion. Who cares what he meant? The important thing is you are moving up.

I take it to mean your work's good enough, but not necessarily the best of the best. Your personality makes up for not being the best, and you're easy to work with. That's a pretty good compliment imo. Your better suited to the job since people can get along with you. All the skillz in the world aren't worth much if you're a dickhead, and people can't work with you.

You have the skills and you are a good performer or you would not have your job. What your boss is saying is you have the temperament for the position he is offering you.

I have worked with and for assholes and they have made the job a living hell. I and most people working around these assholes do their damndest to get away them even if it means leaving the company.

Perhaps people skills are important and he thinks you have them?
