In a conversation with a superior where you work, he "off the cuff", nonchalantly offers you a substantially promoted position. You mention you're flattered that he appreciates the quality of work you've been doing, to which he says "oh, I don't really care about that. You're just a really nice guy and easy to work with, everyone likes you."
So, wtf does that mean? He doesn't care about the quality of work I do? He doesn't think I actually do great work but everyone seems to think I'm a swell person, so oh well? It kinda sounded like a comment to a female getting a promotion: "well, the quality of your output is so-so, but you got big jugs."
Am I looking way too much into this? I'm really happy to receive the offer, which I doubt he would offer if he didn't like the work I do. Recently, the dept gave me an award for outstanding performance. So I think I'm doing well. It just seemed such an odd remark to make in that conversation...
