How would you handle this situation?

I teach 7th grade Math and a couple weeks ago before class, a student took some of my hand sanitizer and squirted it on a student's chair. I asked the class who did it but of course nobody came forward. I then told the students to approach me after school if they know who did it as somebody had to have seen the student. Well nobody spoke out and today when the students came back from their break a student complained to me that someone had put gum on her chair. Once again nobody saw anything. How should I handle a situation like this where someone is doing something and nobody will speak out even though they must know?

Well, there is only one option. Crack out the whip and cane, and get spanking.

P.S You're a teacher this is your job, you should know how to discipline children on your own.

Liberal solution: identify kid using group therapy session, realize its the whole class' fault for not giving him enough attention, have class 'understand' where he's coming from (because it obviously can't be a female who is behaving deviantly) and apologize to him and the problem will magically go away.

Conservative solution: Setup a camera, catch the little bastage in the act, punish to train respect for others and better behavior.

Well of course I can punish the whole class and take away restroom and break privileges but I really dislike having to punish students who I know are innocent.

I would just threaten them and tell them that whoever is doing that stuff had better stop because if you catch them you will make sure they pay. Then when you catch the little bastard stash a gun in his school locker/backpack, report him, and watch the hilarity ensue. :D

I woulda made a great teacher, lol.

Never stopped the teachers back when I was in school. In retrospect, some of them (us) started to resent the known troublemaker(s) for the extra work they caused, which made ratting them out more likely.

Edit: Yarrrr!

I don't want to give extra homework either as homework should not be looked upon as a negative or punishment. Unfortunately security cameras being installed would raise all sorts of legal issues that I am not prepared to deal with.

The issue is that it's not just the kid who put the stuff on the chairs, but at least part of the class is covering for the troublemaker. And the rest of the class has probably gossiped about it to the extent that most of them know who it is. I would wager that more than half of them are guilty of not talking.

I would make it a week long ordeal, or until you find out who did it. Hopefully it shouldnt ever happen again. Hopefully you don't get any false tattles.

Punish them all with extra workload. Make sure to state the only reason that this is happening is because someone did so and so things to another student. The kids know who did it, when they crack lay off the homework. I remember one time something similar happened in class the teacher had us write "I will not lie to protect someone that did something wrong and because I did I must write this sentence out xxxx." xxxx was the number that line was upto; it that went upto 6000. I think around line 1000 everyone started to crack. Had the culperit pretty quick. Instilled the fear of god in us.

Awesome teacher though, old guy ran his class like a boot camp. We had to actually sing out the national anthem and not just hum along. As rewards he would bring snacks into class on Fridays oh and let us bring lunch from the cafeteria to eat in the classroom at which time he would put on recorded episodes of lake eerie, simpsons or some other stuff. Mr. Ramseur rocked!

So you're saying that you would do it if only you were prepared for the legal issues?

Install one of those X10 cameras in your classroom.

true, teachers did this in 7th grade at my school.

som ekids were stealing expensive equipment and they installed cameras in the room.

worked :)

but if you want to catch the culprit hide the camera so they dont know they are recorded :p.
