This guy at work is a good employee as far as always doing his job. However, he will go outside his job and do your job too if he can get to it before you can, then bitch behind your back that you're not doing your job. He does this to everyone whenever he gets the chance.

In group settings when everyone is interacting, he quietly sits in the background with sunglasses on judging everyone's comments, then later will snipe on them to somebody in private.

Unknown to most employees, his is probably the biggest whiner of the group, but he is so quiet about it--only going to his superiors--that almost nobody knows. It's comical when he doesn't get his way b/c he literally sticks out his lower lip and pouts.

He can have a real subtle yet malicious effect on people, but nobody would ever suspect this "nice guy/good employee".

How would you deal with this guy?!

I would approach him in private and ask him to please let me do my own work. Say it in a way so that you're not accusing him of anything, you're just letting him know the boundaries (with you at least). That way he can't talk smack about you.

That's a pretty tough situation, I've never had that happen to me. Maybe nextime thanks him for doingyour work then off to do some of his work (making sure some people hear this). Or you can maybe put some 'fake' work for him to do ;)

Cheers,
Aquaman

I am never really in that enviornment, but if I were, I'd just talk to them about it. and then injure them.

Tell him his job he has certain responsibilities, while it's commendable that he goes out of his way to do other people's things
it's actually not beneficial to anyone. If he keeps doing it warn him again and tell him specifially that next time he does
something he's not supposed to do he'll be suspended or whatever your punishment is. You have to be firm and
show that you won't put up for it not even a little bit.

either you join an ambitious better run company or get him sacked or tell everyone either way one of you will be gone soon after, if you tell everyone make sure they are capable of seeing it or are bothered sounds like you should go for a more ambitious company

Definitely talk to him in private, let him know that he's not being paid to do other peoples work. Then if that doesn't work complain about him to the management. Sometimes the only way to get through to someone is to have their higher-ups have a little chat with them. If that doesn't work start breaking limbs.

You are a co-worker of this guy? And he's complained to your boss about you not doing your job? I don't know if this would work, but it's what I would do.

If you know you have the facts, take the guy aside sometime and ask him exactly why he's unhappy about the way you do your job and ask why he went to your boss. Press for specific reasons. He'll probably just play dumb and say he doesn't know what you're talking about. Then you tell him that you know he's done it, he's a damn liar, and if he has a problem in the future you expect him to come to you first. Don't threaten him.

Then you go to your boss sometime and say that you are concerned about the guy. Explain that the guy seems vaguely unhappy about the way you are doing your job, but he doesn't explain what is bothering him. And then you say that if the boss was dissatisfied with your performance, he'd tell you, wouldn't he?

The way to solve the group meeting problem is to make sure he participates. Ask for his opinion (and get others to do it also) during the discussions. Just say simply "What do you think, Bill?" If enough people press him to commit to a position, he might be more reluctant to snipe others.

Go postal on him - j/k - Speak with him first, if that gets you nowhere, go to his supervisor.

Well then give him a LOT more work. If he does other peoples jobs and his as well, then give them more work.

There is ALWAYS more work to be done.

That type of person ended up putting me at odds with my boss and led to me quitting a job I enjoyed. Nothing you do will be harsh enough!

One word....DOCUMENTATION! Record his activities.....the time will come....

The next time he does some of your work, simply comment to his supervisor that he doesn't seem to have enough to do and perhaps his job responsibilities should be expanded so that he wouldn't have to go looking for work. Make sure you tell the supervisor what a great employee you think he is for trying to keep himself busy when he doesn't have enough to do. Now here's the kicker, you then suggest that since this guys position doesn't have enough work for a full time employee, perhaps he could be replaced with a part time worker, or his position could be eliminated, thereby saving the company thousands of dollars, and the paltry little bit of work he has can be distributed among half a dozen of the other employees. This approach makes you look like a company man rather than a disgruntled employee.

That might be a bit too subtle.

Maybe you could send this gung-ho SOB over here to do part of my job for me?
I'm at the point that I'm not looking to get promoted any more.

other options are serrepticiosly throw him off a balcony, murder him, plant a bomb in his car and blame it on the antipeado campaingners, poison him, doa 'mr coffee' of him and piss in his coffee - nono thats too bad, or even short circut his rig if he has got one.

seriously though there are better places than that go and find them they are usually run by entrepreneurs not powerless management the guy isa dangerous beureaucrat so watch out as well, does he have any originality?

well, if you work with him, try and notify management i guess :p

if he works for you, just make sure that he never gets promoted and that management is fully aware of his character. that way you can benefit from his competitive nature with no compromise to moral since nobody knows about this (accoridng to you)

Flatten his tires, break every window and mirror on his car, and punch a hole in his radiator.

That should get his attention. :D

Just politey tell him that if he wants to go out of his way to do your work then that is fine but the next time he bitches about it you will rip out his tongue and feed it to the goldfish.

Remember to talk softly and politey and smile the whole time.

Heh... I am that guy :)

My guess is he doesn't have enough to do. He sounds intelligent with a tendancy toward rational criticism.... he's probably going to find fault with everything and anything because he's bored and has nothing better to do..... Give him special projects that will use his skills and keep him occupied. If he finishes his work send him home early.

He is wearing those sunglasses in group settings because he is to scared to participate.... get him involved in smaller groups and he will probably be a real asset. He's probably not a leader but as long as he has instructions and clearly defined goals he can probably be left alone and trusted to complete his work....
