how would XP run on this laptop?

PIII 500 with 64MB RAM and a 6GB hard drive. I don't know about the video card or anything, as the system isn't mine.. but I was thinking about putting XP on it for my parents to use (everything is pretty simple and nice, and I think it would help my mom out a lot).

I have it running on my system (Athlon running at 935MHz, 256MB RAM, 30GB hard drive and a GeForce 2 MX video card) and it's excellent, but I'm kind of concerned about the low amount of ram the laptop has, and how it might run.

The laptop is primarly for my mom's schoolwork and for browsing the internet - no games. I'd test it, but I'd like some opinions on whether or not I should even give it a shot.

Thanks.

Forget XP/W2K on anything with 64MB RAM, IMHO. 128 should be listed as a minimum, 256 is mo' better.

If you have a couple of hours to kill... I'd say backup all the files onto another computer and experiment... although I agree 64MB of RAM is kinda small.

64MB is going to hurt. I did okay with 96MB, though I saw a huge improvement once I got to 160MB. CPU speed will be alright. Video shouldn't matter much, though I noticed that XP likes to use a lot of 24/32bit graphics, so things might look ugly if the video didn't support it for some odd reason.

The only problem I see is the 64MB of memory. I have a PII450 laptop w/ 128MB of memory and it runs pretty nice. I really need another 128MB of memory and then I think I would be golden. I really don't feel like getting a new laptop... it serves its purpose for connecting wirelessly to the internet, transferring pics from my camera while on the road and typing up the occasional doc. 🙂

Like people said above, add another memory and you are set. If I am not mistaken, one member of this forum is using XP on his old P 166 laptop. His username is Zwingle or something like that. Maybe you want to contact him. He told me that it ran faster than Win 2000 on it. So if he can run it then I don't see any reason why you can't. Try with 64 MB Rams first, if it's too slow then add another memory. One stick of 64 Rams won't be that expensive, probabyly around $15. 128 MB is around $20-25 right now. Go to FS/FT forum to see it by yourself.

Good Luck

Everythign but the ram seems good enough. I put it on my laptop (366mhz, 96MB, 6GB) and it was a bit too slow to operate even with all enhancements off. So i switched back to ME. Unless you can afford to up that ram to at least 128 then i wouldnt switch. (But then again, if you can back up the system then its always fun to experiment. I did a ghost on the laptop and tried xp out. since it didnt work for me i just ghosted the old one back.)

I am running xp pro final on my hp n5210 (650 celeron) and it runs great. all I added was a 128 meg stick of ram to 64megs it came with, that you can get for less than $50.00 almost anywhere.

I am running XP on my laptop also

I have basically the same thing as descriped here except I have 224mb of ram, and it runs fine. It is a little bit faster than when I had w2k on it.
