My friend says that he's ready to upgrade from his pentium II, he got a $1000 christmas bonus this year, so he wants to put it into a new computer. He knows how to build a computer, and has been keeping his PII as up-to-date as possible, and he just needs some help deciding what parts to pick (for example, until a few days ago when I told him, he thought that intel owned AMD at multitasking).

Motherboard (he insists on having 2 full x16 slots, he's like "I've heard this a thousand times, people say you won't need this or that and then a few years down the road you do", so I am forced to pick this mobo)

Graphic Card (he will be gaming)

Hard Drive (I have this one, it's sooo fast, but if you guys can think of something better for the money...)

RAM ($7 more than corsair value ram with the rebate)

CPU (he likes to multitask, alot)

Case/PSU

DVD Burner (i have this one too, it's awesome)

Total = $1341.14

He is willing to spend up to 1500, but he needs a new monitor (his supports 800x600 max). A CRT would be fine, any suggestions?

Awesome DVD burner and CPU choice. I'm sure it will OC well. As for a monitor I would go with a LCD by Samsung or Viewsonic. Some stores have lcd's for a great price after rebate. HDD's can be had very cheap after rebate at compusa or best buy.

Though there are cheaper mobo choices like DFI Expert and the non 32 SLI asus board.

Thanks. He has room for a CRT though, and he could get a higher resolution CRT for the same price as an LCD.

he pretty much has insisted on the 32 SLI asus board.

I'd prob get another case and add my own PSU. Like an Antec Neopower or Seasonic S12. I really don't like the Sonata because it is hard to match drives with that "piano black" finish. I wouldn't buy the SOnata unless you have sene one in real life. Otherwise everything is great.

I have one and I like it. It has a drive bay cover so you don't see the drives that much.
