How would this fan work??

Ya. I tried that on one of mine but it went haywire and I almost ruined my CPU... 70c in 3 seconds...
DOH...guess you'll test with a case fan first next time 😉

To answer your original question, I can't see any reason it wouldn't work. However if you're going to use their noiseless operation dongle thingy, it looks as if you'll not be getting an RPM readings off the fan since the little dongle thingy only has 2 pins.

I DID use a case fan, I have an Antec TruePower and it has connectors for 5v modding case fans. But at least my CPU is working! 🙂

I dont care if I cant read it's RPM, I just want it to be quieter.

Any suggestions where I can get a ZM-F1 fan and a ZM-80 GPU Cooler for cheap? Thanks!

Ok I'm confused you mod'd a case fan but nearly torched your CPU? (BTW my comment about using a case fan to test the mod wasn't meant to be snotty if that's what it seemed). Anyway yes this appears to be a good solution for you if noise is the issue. As for where to buy I don't have any good suggestions off the top of my head but I thought Zalman had an online store (I could be wrong).

Actually, now that I see it on the Zalman fan, how reliable are the Sleeve Bearings, would the Hydro-Wave Bearings on the Panaflo be more reliable?

Possibly, Panaflo's are generally regarded as the most reliable fans. On top of that, decibel ratings can be very subjective, depending upon the methods used- Panaflo's are known to be quieter than other manufacturer's fans rated at the same decibel. From a cfm:noise ratio, you'd do better with the Panaflo, plus you'll get rpm monitoring (something nice to have, even if it's not 'necessary'.)
