How would this compare?

Depends entirely on what you're using it for. If mainly gaming, yes, the faster X2 will do a better job. For media encoding, if the apps you're running are multithreaded the X3 will probably win (although 2.3GHz isn't exactly blazing fast).

That's what I figured. A buddy is building a rig with a 780G mobo and can't afford my cpu but I thought this one would be worthwhile for him. Thanks.

Personally I'd go for the X2 5050e (2.6GHz, 45W, $63) instead and OC a little. Half the power consumption and nearly the same performance (especially if you OC) makes it a win.

Just saw the new X2 7750BE based on the Phenom core for $80. Seems to OC to 3.1-3.2 easily with just a little voltage increase and raising the multi. Might be a better deal for him than the X2 6000+.

The new X2 7750 is definitely better than the X2 6000+ for gaming (and other apps, whole article is worth a read). It even stacks up pretty well against the e5200 in many uses (at stock speeds, that is).

Basically they took K10 (Phenom) and stripped it down to two functional cores instead of trying to tweak more performance out of the older K8 (original X2) architecture. K10-based Phenom X4 can best a low cache C2Q (Q8200) in some cases, especially when the clockspeed difference is significant (stock Q8200 vs X4 9950 for example). So it's not too surprising to see the K10 X2 chips competing with the low-cache C2D chips.

EDIT: You might want to keep the power consumption in mind also. Read some of the reviews at newegg, many people are complaining about the heat generated by these chips and saying that stock cooling just isn't doing the job.

In GTA4 your X3 will out do the X2 and also a bit more than the 7750.

Overall i would say get a 7750 or else get a cheap x3... The 7750 would better in many games as it is clicked higher and can also OC higher but X3 will be more future proof!!

I'm not much of a gamer but I do encode video for my ipod so I do want as much performance as I can get. The 7750BE is making it very difficult for me to wait for the PhII 920 to come out, especially considering that the 920 will cost considerably more from what I hear.
